I've wondered about this, too. But it's sort of impossible to know, because Bolin's character for most of the series is predicated on the fact that Korra never considers him as a serious partner. In the end, Bolin was just "the comic-relief guy," as we all feared (with a dash of "Hey, I have special bending abilities now" thrown in for good measure).

The track of Bolin's character arc would be fairly different if he had a romantic interest, for the duration of the series, who was as gritty, practical, and forthright as he.

Honestly, the character of Bolin was damaged beyond good in season 2. They just kept making him more retarded with every "book", the guy just never achieved his full potential and was delegated to be nothing but comic relief.

Bryke fucked up with everything in this show... and it somehow makes me feel bad. I wanted to like this, i wanted to enjoy it.

Bolin was pretty boring and one note as far as characters go.

This would only be worth it if he had gotten some better writing.

The only thing that really needed more screentime were Korra's abs.

LoK should have focused more on Korra adjusting to life in the outside world, how the rest of the world has become less dependent on the Avatar and her just trying to fit in with people her age.

Not really. She was awesome in season 1. She was basically written as a normal person who is suddenly plunged into a "superhero" world and has to learn to cope. But as a LI she's always bitching at the MC and generally being stupid about it. He doesn't tell her something and she's like "If you really loved me you'd tell me!" Not to mention making her a love interest detracts from her character because she's not defined by who she is, she's defined by her romance with the MC.

Like all the seeds were there, she had never left the White Lotus temple, was oblivious to the non benders feeling oppressed, she started making friends with Bolin and Mako.

We just needed a few episodes of them showing Korra visiting places she has heard about, but never seen, how the non benders of other cities and villages felt and her awkwardly trying to make friends in new activities she has never tried before.

Nah, Korra's journey was a solo one. The whole show was about her overcoming her problems.

Unfortunately the writers forgot everyone except her and Bolin; Mako and Asami were driftwood; the three of them should've been a fun trio. Mako and Asami weren't bad for each other either, but any characters who need a relationship to define them are generally weak.

Not leaving Republic City hurt the show quite a bit, they could have introduced new places like a Las Vegas type city or one of the Fire nation settlements that was built during the 100 year war and they could have showed off places from the original like the fishing village which was being polluted and how the original Team Avatar stopping the pollution affected it or how Korra would react to Kyoshi Island being a female Avatar herself.

There are people who actually give a rat's ass about this show?

It blundered everything. The characters were unlikable and didn't form any meaningful relationships. The main character, worst of all, was immediately the master of everything yet got her ass handed to her constantly, making a huge, glaring contrast between her day-by-day 'tough girl' persona and when she'd break down and cry because Amon called her a faggot. They didn't travel to interesting lands or meet interesting people. Nobody learned anything. There were never any high stakes, even during the most tense moments in the show. They retroactively made the good characters from the original series a cast of miserable, antisocial losers who hate their lives. And to put the cherry on top, the hackneyed dyke kiss at the end served to do nothing but try and dissuade all forms of criticism under the veil of "well it was shit, but look at how progressive it was!" Quite possibly the most hamfisted, cynical means possible to ensure anyone who looks back on this show can't find any memories of it, save for how they were manipulated in the end.

I mean sure, discussion of this crappy show would probably pass on tumblr, but I'd never expect it to get any serious attention on 4chan. What's wrong with you people?

I think if it had just been them hooking up, being flirty and maybe having some moments without it going anywhere as far as Aang and Katara or Zuko and Mei, it'd have been perfect.

The romance was the literal tipping point of the entire series, by far.

I have to agree that this was one of the underlying problems,specifically in season one. Bolin is essentially a poor mans Sokka. Atempting to fill the role of funny guy, and failing. The rest of Sokka's traits and responsibilities are kind of half assedly thrown at Asami, who is a boring blank slate and none of it really sticks after season 2. So Bolin doesnt eve have that going on for him. So if Bolin cant be an effective funny guy, cant be integral to the group like Sokka was, and on top of that the show lacks the camaraderie that last airbender had it really starts to suffer as a whole.

It really was the moment the series tripped over its own feet. First episode was practically perfect, setting up Korra as a different breed of avatar compared to Aang. Second one had a bit of a hurdle with the whole "I forbid you to do something that might help you find the proper channels/outlet for learning that skill you suck at", but worked overall. Third was pretty good at establishing how dangerous Amon and his equalists are, while the fourth established him as a villain who could see potential drawbacks if he killed/depowered his foes recklessly.

Then the fifth throws in Asami, AND Korra suddenly having feelings for Mako out of the blue and it turns into one big shitpile of intertwined romances

I was actually stupid enough to believe that they would pull a swerve in season 1. They teased Mako and Korra being a thing in the pilot, but then Mako meets Asami and they start dating and I was actually a little pleased that the avoided the 'Main character dates main male/girl' trope. However they just had to add the damned love triangle and it's just pissed me off. It did all of the characters a big disservice and it made Korra and Mako look like assholes. (Yet Mako got the burnt of it.)

Both Korra and Mako WERE areseholes, but at least Mako owned up to it. For Korra, it took longer.

Also Bolin is fucking awesome. If there was one good scene from season 2 which i fucking loved, it was when he went full Alex Armstrong and took down the water benders on the pro-bending arena.

A failed revolution, the life of an rouge firebender, the failed defense of the air temples. Like a matrix revolutions style. Would be cool. Could feature various characters from the shows but I think it'd be better if they could make it work without them.
