I think the biggest reason PS ended up being way better than homestuck is because it featured characters that were largely caricatures.

The boss battle 300 panels long was really, really, really exhausting, and by the end of it I had forgotten many of the one-joke characters that reappeared.

I tried Homestuck, but it seemed the same.

I binged it all in one go by the way, because the first time I lost my "progress" halfway through and I was scared it would happen again. Maybe that's why I couldn't enjoy it.
Maybe that's not the way to read it.

The earlier stuff, with the room and the pumpkin, and that adventure in the swamp thing, THOSE are actually nice and have a not-insane length. I liked those.

Problem Sleuth cannot be considered "concise", "short and sweet". I won't allow it.
Even if Homestuck is a lumbering behemoth of chaos in comparison.

I usually just keep clicking through when the Weird Puzzle Shit got too thick, when it came to PS.

it's notable for realizing his vision for the series instead of making convoluted end game decisions based on baffling current-moment goals.

all through ps it seemed like he was telling the same story. i think he thrives on the audience input format. it wouldn't work anymore due to regular controversies about somebody else's comic.

the characters were clear and made sense. i think he should come up with a bunch of jokes and rethink his characterization for his next work. he started constantly re-deciding they're a joke, important, serious, or alarming, so the story started falling flat.

I love problem sleuth and i fucking hate HS. My guess is that Hussie saw that PS had all this crazy randomness that ultimately came together and then he tried to capture that. HS doesnt feel random, it just feels like an awful clusterfuck Like, deliberately designed to be fucktarded. Maybe its nostalgia, but because PS had such a normal premise that got so crazy it made me feel invested. When PS got frustrated at bullshit you also got mad. By no means am I going to say that isn't a valid complaint, but it is that way by design. I'm honestly too lazy to dig up a link of a copy of his deleted formspring, but I know Hussie once said Homestuck was intentionally complex with stable time loops and nonlinear story progression because where as PS was a story about a puzzle, the original goal with HS was a story that was a puzzle. Where that stopped being the main goal is up to interpretation.

Rose and kanaya really didn't have the best dynamics as just friends. Kanata wanted to bang her the whole time and rose was just using her to get information to help her rampage. Then she died and saw Kanaya and realized how gay she was. Compared to Dave and karat who did have a good friendship that turned into gay. Rose and kanayas never had that great a friendship because even though it took 2 years it was obvious that they were gonna get together when rose begged her to stay on the meteor.

Thing is, out of all of them ONLY Dave's home life was ever noted to be abusive by the livebloggers, Mom was noted to be negligent somewhat often and Jade's life was tragic but it neither ever were regarded as being bad to the point of the reader thinking the parental figure had failed at raising a child, much less being actively harmful to their development, Bro quite often was

The troll culture was almost always taken as outright horrifying but could be written off as alien bullshit, the only one time any ready specifically noted one toll's lives as particularly fucked up it was Vriska's codependent relationship with her Lusus

I don't know what to say other than it's a small sample size but from what I've seen more people than not saw Bro's treatment of Dave as abusive and fucked up far moreso than anyone else's in the comic but also par for the course of the comic's humor, it was a silly joke but it was also one long dark joke that half the time they reacted with more horror than with humor

Honestly, any situation where the characters are, for the most part, actually set up as characters, is fine with me. I mean, I like a lot of the characters, but it's only because of fan-stuff or fan-art, because a lot of the characters have extremely little development.
For example, Feferi. The role she had was making Eridan angry/lonely, and in the end, Eridan ended up being completely useless as well. Granted, Feferi made the dream bubbles, but that MASSIVE detail that literally prevents every character from just disappearing from the story after their death is just glossed over and almost everyone whose read the comic forgets about it.

Speaking of which, the story jumps around to so many different places, as well as just how fucking huge the story is, the vast majority of the story is forgotten about unless it's brought up over and over and over. It makes going back to catch up on whatever stuff hussie did after the latest gigapause seem not worth it, because more likely than not it'll be more of the same garbage build-up that we've been fed for the past couple years.

And yet, I still want to know how this fucking thing ends, if only because I've been on this ride for so damn long. I just want it to stop for good. It's not like Homestuck is that popular anymore, and I really don't see what Hussie could gain by dragging the story on and on.

The problem I have with the comic is how wild and nonsensical the character focus is. Developed characters are pushed into the background. Background characters are focused on, then dropped again. Characters take up increasing amounts of screentime until the story is about them and the main protagonists are pushed to the side.

Vriska being a relevance magnet and Mary Sue parody is exactly like Gamzee's immortal mute clown shit. They're the kind self-aware meta jokes that Hussie drags on and on until the meme stops being funny, and then becomes funny again on virtue of being overused. It's like his horse obsession jokes. Maybe you find them funny, but I don't. Vriska is a major symptom of that, so that's why I didn't include her.

yeah, that's what I mean. I can agree you could trim down her content, but I don't think you could axe her. She exists as an almost perfect 'how not to Sburb' character, a representation of everything the trolls did wrong,
and in many ways she sets the stage for Caliborn, as he possesses all the traits that make her a bad person and none of the tiny slivers of virtue that make Vriska at least seem like she has good intentions.
