To think it had such potential.
I blame the massive plot reworking the writers said they had to go through like mid-job though.

It wasn't THAT bad. I honestly think that Dark House did a decent job seeing as they don't adopt any of the Alien cliches, or anything that Alien became popular for.

Yeah, coz they lack the numbers because they didn't drag enough people to the hive to have more xeno drones to drag the rest.

What are your favourite theories?
I like the one about Aliens being highly evolved peaceful race that to get rid of their bad emotions have to put their babies in a pyramid (or whatever) for a couple a days, but something went wrong and they're reduced to them bugs.
And the one about how Aliens are ancient alien bioweapons.
Sick.

That's a bit dull.
I think one of the Alien comics' I've read somewhere in the 90's had a nicer spin on this IMO.
That the Aliens predate every single one spacefaring race except, like, one that most probably created them or whatever and they pop in whenever a certain race gets spread around the galaxy enough or something, to cull it. Like, the force of nature.
Whatever it was so long ago I don't even remember what was the title. Maybe "Aliens: Angles" if something like this existed, but I only remember it being good, having the _original_ space jockey and not remembering the plot.
Cheers.

That's a good theory aswell. Honestly, I was so anti Prometheus for a long time, but then I studied the movie more and worked out the apparent plotholes that weren't actually plot holes. And now it kinda seems all plausible. Alien 5 in 2017 should shed some more light on the subject.

I wish it was still a mystery. That's what made Alien 1 so good. The awe and mystery of their existence.

Prometheus is one of the best Sci-Fi's ever created. Everyone needs to stop associating it with Alien so much. Yes it's part of the Alien universe. Will at affect the upcoming Alien movie? No. It won't.

>>
>>77520479

I trust neither of these men.

Prometheus was bad for reasons unrelated to the lore anyhow, it just wasnt exciting or coherent what-so-fucking-ever. That they made the jockrys boring and did a worse job at ANCIENT ALIENS than fucking AvP is it's own deal.
>>
>>77521268
Pretty much this, to be honest. It has none of the tension out sense of peril that Alien did. The cast was too large and the small handful that received any development at all were shallow and under-realized. You can get away with having character "types" in a film like Alien because their relationships aren't personal, they're professional and there's a certain amount of distance between everyone as a result; but you can't pull off that trick when you have complicated romantic and familial relationship, like between Shaw and Holloway; or between Vickers, Weyland and David. You have to put in the effort to flesh those out and you can't do that when you're cutting back and forth to the Fifield and Millburn show, or Idris Elba's impromptu squeezebox solo.

And that's not even touching the fact that the story is all over the place. The black goo is liquid Deus Ex Machina, it does whatever the plot needs it to do in that particular scene; characters who are ostensibly experts in their fields behave like dopey college students in a slasher flick; and what little thought is given to the premise amounts to coffee shop theology - although, in fairness, you do have to go to Ridley Scott's boneheaded commentary on Jesus being an Engineer to close the loop on the two-thousand-year-old corpse.

There's not much to like and a whole lot to hate about Prometheus. A lot of that could be forgiven if they'd at least made it an enjoyable film but watching the movie is a chore.

>>77521210

Yeah. Personally, I think the origin, or creation, or details surrounding the Xenos should not be touched. I mean, you can tease at it a little bit, sure, but it shouldn't ever be definitively showed.

They should just be mysterious creatures that writhe in the shadows, from some long-forgotten corner of the universe. People may find a way to deal with a few of them, or they may experiment on them a little to find some tiny hints about them, but at the end of the day, you know they're always out there and don't know where they're going to pop up next to wreck everyone's shit.

Ridley Scott basically says what he likes is his canon, he doesn't consider any comic canon.

The general fanbase has sorta said "fuck that", and treats it all as canon where is matches. No point throwing out hard work and a strong history that people enjoy just because Ridley wants to do his Prometheus movies.

And hell, Fire and Stone even ties the comics back into Prometheus. Far as I'm concerned, it's canon.

I'm pretty sure the story is that Fire and Stone was originally supposed to be canon and tie the Alien, Prometheus and Predator movie universes further together.

Scott (or someone) saw the early drafts and whoever was working on the F&S comics was told to scrap everything/most everything and start over, with the comics being their own thing.

Scott has never liked the Predators, and never wanted them to be a part of the Aliens universe. To him, Alien and Prometheus are the only things in continuity. I don't think he even seriously considers Aliens as part of the continuity, and definitely none of the alien movies after that, and certainly none of the AvP movies.

So, Fire and Stone more or less ended up being a new universe, IIRC that just retold the story of the Engineers and became an alternate telling of how the Alien/Predator/Prometheus universes are connected.

>>

Just finished the Hardcover. The Behind the Scenes section says that Fox told them the comic drafts was contradicting the future Prometheus movies, so they had to scrap a lot of stuff. They're treating it as canon, the way they always have when making comics, even if Ridley Scott doesn't

It's basic conservation of energy, which is applicable because Alien (at least the first movie, aside from the FTL and deep sleep chambers) is fairly grounded in scientific principles.

Since the egg stage doesn't eat, and the facehugger stage doesn't eat, the larger stage has to eat, especially since the chestburster (which presumably eats a little bit on the way out) grows exponentially in a very short time. The alternatives are that everything is put into the cycle at the start, by whatever creates the egg; or that the alien itself is capable of extracting all necessary energy from oxygen/other gases, but given the way they can survive protracted periods of total vacuum it seems unlikely they have that kind of lung capacity or need to breathe.

The eggs are either laid by a queen (who must eat), or by some kind of genetic manipulation (as with the transformation of.. I forget his name, in the Director's Cut of Alien).

And it is confirmed by Prometheus that they're created lifeforms, though I don't know there's anything explicit on screen that calls them bioweapons.

Also while we're all here (sorry OP if you're still trying to storytime), Lambert is best girl. It's just a hard scientific fact.

i heard a theory once that said that the hive itself is a lifeform of it's own, a fungus, that exist symbiotically with the xenos, and once 'planted', begins to eat away and deform the materials around it i.e. minerals, metals, forming goop that the xenos can consume, in return the xenos would glue victims to it which it would also progressively digest, like a giant carnivore plant/bee hive hybrid.

their growth speed may vary depending on how much 'hive' they have access to, if it's not present, they'd have to use their atrophied digestive systems and less than ideal mouths and throats to chow on anything molecularly simple to win mass.

you probably thought the predalien and aliens were good BECAUSE it was so dark, anon. Those designs were the stage in the franchise where ADI said "fuck it these dumbshits will eat up anything" and simply recycled the AvP designs and made them uglier.

they were cheap in every sense. The suits were ill-fitting to the actors and had floppy ends everywhere, the Aliens had stupid fat hands with long crooked fingers, thick buck teeth, short, stubby torsos and legs, and slimmy paper mache textures all over instead of actually designed body parts. The Predalien wasn't much better, with stupid looking pectorals and shoulders glued on top of an otherwise fairly biomechanic body, nonsensical dreads growing out like ponytails for some reason, and a shitty baby poop color scheme that didn't match the other aliens at all.

now for their actual combat performance, they were dumb as bricks and insultingly lame, but there was a lot of suckage to process in that shitfest.

>Aliens in the comics that get stuck without a queen always tend to go into killing
That would fit nicely with the "good aliens unless they don't forget to visit them pyramids or whatever" thing.
Would love this to be explored more and not "muh mindless bugs to shoot at" shit.

>>77538407
Nigga, you engineer a superiorest bioweapon you make sure it don't die of starvation midway carrying out the plan (of total life extinction on galactic scale). You do, however, make sure they don't last indefinitely. Just in case. In my ""head canon"" they use up whatever makes them run from inside of themselves and then just switch off and fossil-y for a scary ass souvenir.
Also, I like to think (stole from at least one comic) that they take some of the hosts' characteristic, to better serve the purpose.
Aliens don't eat, don't breathe, don't hear or see. They do induce primal fear.

>And it is confirmed by Prometheus that they're created lifeforms, though I don't know there's anything explicit on screen that calls them bioweapons.
It's simpler to not include Prometheus and Alien in the same canon.
As to the bioweapon bit, aliens themselves ain't present there, but the goo sure is and for all intents and purposes it is a bioweapon.

>>77538781
That's pretty sick.

>>77538850
>lone xeno having a hive
What for though? Can he make a queen?
How are queens made anyhow? Can drones "evolve" into queens? Would make sense for the bioweapon theory - a single egg could bring doom to a whole planet. Would not make sense for all the AvP (as seen in AvP War for example).

>"big deletion"
That reminds me that there used to be (or at least one of the pages in one of the comics' hinted on it) a theory that said humans were once "ancient alien" level of technological developement and then aliens happened and we got reduced to cavemen and now it's all about to happen again.
Pretty fucking sick.
Earth being one of the most remote colonies, only saved by an accident. We are the space jockeys. Some ancient shmucks developed aliens to wreck our shit but it backfired hilariously.

>That lone viking vs the Xeno

Fuck that was a good comic. Someone needs to story time that.
>>
>>77540813
It would make a great movie.

1 man vs 1 beast.

I always had some idea about a lone Xeno stalking and attempting to kill a lone survivor in a ship. I always imagine the lone survivor always having a ways to fend off the beast but not kill it. Eventually the scene transitions to a nearby forest/jungle to a desert and to some facility. The entire time it's cat and mouse ans the survivor and the xeno face off in a stale mate each time due to the survivors resources on hand.

This is just me bullshitting ideas though, but honestly every time I think about it, it has sort of a sense of dread and fear to it.

Anyways I need to reread Aliens: Stalker.
>>
>>77540988
>>77541028
wasn't the main viking an immortal too or some shit? and it wasn't a lone warrior, the alien killed at least 20 vikings, its been a while since i read it but i do remember loving how the vikings were breaking their swords over the alien's face. always gave that comic props for remembering xenos are armored as fuck

a viking setting would probably work better for predator though. at least for a movie

>What for though? Can he make a queen?

The one from the first movie was capable of turning people into eggs, according to both the novel and the director's cut. Presumably either they can become queens (the way that fish and certain other organisms can change sex when there are no males/females present in a given population), or they can promote an egg to become a queen egg.

>Aliens don't eat, don't breathe, don't hear or see.

Possibly the first point, certainly the rest are all contradicted by on-screen evidence. Creatures that don't breathe don't have any use for lungs; they haven't the ability to exhale, which we've seen. Whether they have eyes and ears or not is debatable - but they certainly "hear" and "see" about as well as a human, better even. Really it's just semantics.

>It's simpler to not include Prometheus and Alien in the same canon.

Never got that. Neat.

That's neat too.

They don't breath as in can not breathe at all. Being underwater and in vacuum don't have an impact on them. And I don't think they ever got poisoned or whatever with gas.

All 6th sense telepathy mumbo-jumbo, so that one could not exactly "blind" them with conventional means (ie. flash-bang nades and whatever).

They breath, but don't have to.
How would they "skreeee" if they didn't have the capability to exhale?
>>
>>77539588

That's more of her roll as a character. Ripley is pretty much the no-nonsense, badass character of the movie (aside from maybe Dallas) and her gender literally doesn't even factor into 99% of the movie until they put her frumpy ass into some panties for a pitiful sex appeal attempt a the end.

>>77547659

You seem to be under the impression that I was saying that scene made her less badass, or not at all, which isn't what I was saying either.

Ripley's character was pretty much perfect because the role wasn't about her being a woman. It was about her being caught up in everything just like everyone else, and she was the one that rekt the Xeno when it came down to it all.

>>77547709
I will concede the hands are floppy.
But none of it was ever really noticeable in the film,

>>77547709
That lighting is the problem. You can get away with a lot of your scene is properly lit; but between the backlighting and the spot from the side, it makes the entire scene look cheap.

No, she's literally written as a dude in the pre-shooting scripts. It was going to be the guy who ended up playing Dallas. They just changed it specifically when Weaver came on board.

>>77547423
Exactly. They breathe, but they don't have to. Like you, or crocodiles, they have a specific ability to go without breathing for periods of time.

But they do breathe, and they do therefore have lungs, which means those are functional - otherwise they wouldn't have them. Going "skreee" isn't something you could only do with lungs, especially if you're covered in a hard exoskeleton.
>>
>>77549328
>No, she's literally written as a dude in the pre-shooting scripts. It was going to be the guy who ended up playing Dallas. They just changed it specifically when Weaver came on board.
That's not true at all. Alien was written without any consideration to the characters' gender. That's why they all go by their last names except for Ash (which is specifically gender neutral). Any if the characters could have been male or female and the only thing you have to change are a few of the pronouns.

Watched the DCs of the first three movies back to back three nights last week. 3 comes out better than 2 until the last act, which is fucking strange but could be salvaged; 1 comes out ahead of both, but it shares some problems with 2 in that the performances are often extremely wooden. It's a shame that the thing they were doing with everybody speaking over each other (for naturalism) didn't hang around in 3.

I mean you can literally cut out a half hour of 2 that's just wan/k/ and it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to the plot. Plus it lacks that sinister horror edge in favor of more flashy, gory shit and showing the aliens in full-body repeatedly, which, let us be clear here, is a mistake of massive proportions.
>>
>>77555218
No, it hadn't.

>In developing the story O'Bannon had focused on writing the Alien first, putting off developing the characters for a later draft.[45] He and Shusett had therefore written all of the roles as generic male ones with a note in the script explicitly stating "The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women."
>>
>>77555324
>>I mean you can literally cut out a half hour of 2 that's just wan/k/ and it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to the plot

that's what they did for the theatrical cut, you know.

the colony sections, the sentry turrets and Ripley's dead daughter are all extra bits of lore thrown in to please fans, they were never part of the movie itself.

>Plus it lacks that sinister horror edge in favor of more flashy, gory shit and showing the aliens in full-body repeatedly, which, let us be clear here, is a mistake of massive proportions.

the removal of the colony and discovery scenes drastically change the mood of the first marine incursion. Watch the theatrical cut, it's far tighter and more tense.
>>
>>77555392
then you could cut a whole hour and it wouldn't make a difference to the plot

>the theatrical cut

The theatrical cut has the same central problem with regard to showing the aliens full-body for extended periods. In a way, Cameron's reliance on that is just to get you used to the idea for the end sequence, but the end sequence is just a rehash of one of his college movies and despite the budget increase it's not really any more impressive. Some of the chroma key work, particularly around the loader during the fight sequence, is bad even for 1985.

Having said that, Alien has the most impressive acid effects of the three - there's a couple of points in the second two movies where you're obviously looking at home depot's finest polystyrene board being exposed to acetone and food coloring.
