I would have compromised with these shitty writers if Mako became progressively more and more disinterested in Asami if she started to so signs she was mentally unhindged. Like say Mako needed help trying to cut his steak and in the middle of trying to help him Asami is rambling to an almost psychotic degree about how Korra has a tendency to butt into her personal life way too frequently then she should

Asami starts carving harder and harder to the point where she stabs the knife through the table and as her eye is twitching and she is hyper ventilating profusely she turns to Mako and screams

Mako tries to calm her down and tries to "reason" with Asami saying how he loves them both equally which triggers Asami harder how she refuses to be on the same par as the Avatar.
