When Riders of Berk premiered, they got the movie's executive producers to talk about how the show would lead-in to the movie. About how, even though the show wouldn't be required viewing, fans would be rewarded in the second movie by knowing certain things from the show.

That was bullshit. It didn't happen. Defenders of Berk had one episode about Hiccup's mother and NOTHING was revealed in it. They could have had Stoick drop a line about his mom being taken by dragons or something.

I suppose we did get one little scene where Hiccup received a dragon toy that his mother made, implying his mother liked dragons, but it barely focused on that.

So I wanna ask - what is it that makes HTTYD special for you? What sets it apart from every other animated movie and gives it that unique quality?

For me - I'm not even sure I can explain it properly, It's a lot of different things. Something about the first movie really spoke to me on a personal level, and I think Forbidden Friendship is the most magical scene in a movie filled with magic. And as a lover of orchestral music, I found the grand and sweeping soundtrack that wasn't overly so to be amazing as well. The visuals are great - they make me wish I had seen it in IMAX 3D. The amount of care placed into tiny subtle details is also astonishing; for example I never noticed Hiccup had a tiny amount of stubble in the scene from webm related until someone pointed it out to me. While the plot may not be 100% original - then again neither were Shakespeare plays - I found the execution to be wholly amazing and I can find very few flaws with it, even nitpicking. I've never cared much for shipping before, but Hiccup and Astrid are literally perfect. It's one of those few series that seriously makes me wish I was in it, either by the day reading these threads and rewatching the movie, or by night lying in bed. Even more so than LOTR, my other favorite fantasy series. HTTYD has pulled me in and hasn't let go, like winter in Berk.
So there they are, my feels laid bare.

Something I really admire about both the movie and series is how competent and empathetic the adult characters are, even if they're making the wrong decisions.

Most animated films make the authority figure a demonstrably wrong character that has to be actively fought against, but Stoick's actions in the first movie are all very understandable, and his role in the series and 2cnd movie was that of a genuinely intelligent and caring chief.
