Also, unrelated question, is it just me or are like half of the threads on /cm/ right now unaccessable through catalog because they lack an intro pic? Is this something that happens periodically on boards with very old threads that stay around for weeks? I normally only frequent boards with a high turnover rate.

It's not just /cm/. The same thing is happening on /y/, /hm/, /w/, /e/, /h/, /vr/, /wsg/, and probably some other boards as well. It's weird.

Personally, I'd say Miyamoto Kano and Yoneda Kou are the go-to mangaka for believable gay relationships in manga.
But forget anime altogether. Apart from Doukyuusei, the movie was as good as the manga.

It's a good comedy but I would not say the characters/relationship are well-written, and if anything play into the kinds of things OP wants to get away from.

Umibe no Étranger is the original story, and Harukaze no Étranger picks up where it left off.

Yuki no Shita no Qualia is by the same author, and complete - though I haven't read this yet.

That list seems pretty good. Some of the stuff I wouldn't recommend, but that might just be my taste. The Canis series by Zakk might be up OP's alley. I like Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai/The Songbird Doesn't Fly, though the story-telling admittedly gets a bit clunky towards the middle due to the yakuza plot.

My question is, what are the series contains BL but doesn't necessarily revolve around it. For example, I thought Banana Fish was pretty homo without it being the defining genre of the series. I guess Adekan also fits this to some extent.

i remember it being a cute SOL type thing about a couple moving in together in a shared house(?). i think either one of them was from hokkaido, or it was set there. at one point they go on holiday with their gay friends. i remember it being fairly long, does anyone know what i'm talking about?

One of my favorite anime is Kyo Kara Maoh. Its a longer fantasy series with tonnes of bishonen, and the protag is becomes engaged to a cute boy by accident in the second episode. BL isnt a large focus of the series though, its kinda more BL undertones than anything else. If you enjoy fantasy anime then its worth looking into.

I highly recommend Doukyuusei. It's really sweet and pure.

I recommend 10 dance though the characters explicitly identify themselves as straight and one of them mentions having gay friends. Also the buildup is incredibly slow up to the point where 4 volumes have been translated but they've only kissed twice while still not being completely sure of their own feelings.

There was also something I read a while back involving a relationship between a yakuza member and a cop, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.

Those two things are the only original BL I've liked.
