Why does water only taste good when it's cold and running?

probably the same reason that coffee tastes bad when it's room temperature. The fact that it is cold, masks the taste.

Cold water actually comes through a different pipe than the hot, which contains more rust and impurities. As for the squirt gun... dunno.
