Is brown butter sauce supposed to taste sweet and slightly like caramel, or do you just have to cook it more to get the "nutty" taste people talk about?

Nothing but butter. It wasn't like syrup, it just smelled more like a sweet sauce than something that would go well with savoury food. I wasn't sure how far you're supposed to take it.
