How should I make burger patties? I've never made them for BBQ before.

Lil salt n pepper before hitting the grill. People don't expect it to be cooked like a steak, as long as they're not raw or hockey pucks you're good.

Good patty? Go to your supermarket and see if they have different grades of ground beef. Go for the one with as close a ratio to 20% fat/80% beef. Mix in some salt and pepper then shape the patties. Dont make them too thick or squash them densely. Pucks the size of a medium-sized condiment jar lid works.
Well Done is what is expected of a patty, but just make sure it's not bleeding and you'll be fine. Some grease will seep so just don't mistake the grease for blood.
I like a good 80% fat and 20% meat patty, so greasy you don't even have to chew
