how do I get into cooking. I'm basically retarded and the most complex dish I can cook is a stir fry or spaghetti bolognese. /ck/ doesn't have a sticky for this kind of shit but I'd like to know what's a good starting ground. I'm looking at cooking meals that compliment my exercise routine, decent amount of carbs and high in protein.

Find recipes online (or in a book) and copy them. This will teach you the fundamentals.

Just follow recipes to the letter.
Identify the basics of cooking, this amount of heat does X to Y and it tastes like Z.
Understand under and overcooking.
Find something you like and think about the balance of flavors.

Apply that to shit when you cook.
It's that easy.

You can do both at the same time by first learning about basic ingredients and how they are used in dishes.

For example, onions and garlic (both very healthy) are base flavors for many western dishes but they can be cut differently and sauteed/fried at different degrees depending on the recipe. You'll taste the difference between two recipes that use onion and garlic differently. Then you can apply the knowledge you've gained to other recipes.

You learn by cooking/ eating.
When you eat something at a restaurant try to ask yourself how they prepared the meal/ what ingredients/ spices they must have used. Then experiment.

So get your basic healthy ingredients and just start cooking is my advice

Thanks mang and everyone else in the thread. Big consensus seems to be following recipes and later using my knowledge of ingredients etc to learn how to create my own dishes. I'll go buy a recipe book tomorrow when I have the chance, thanks again everyone! :)
