Nope. You save it from other cooking and re-use it instead of throwing it away. Also, lard is widely available at supermarkets and is very inexpensive.

Some fats, like duck fat, are sold at expensive hipster stores but you can get it much cheaper by just buying a duck, roasting it, and saving the fat that is left over. There's a lot of fat on a duck or a goose. And if you shop after major holidays you can often get the whole bird for very cheap. I roast the bird, save the fat, then make stock from the carcass. Very economical.

this. you often don't even have to "save" it. you just get it from earlier stages in your cooking.

For example if you were doing a big breakfast you fry the bacon first. Then you use the bacon grease in the pan to cook your sausages, tomatoes, eggs, etc.

I sometimes cook duck breast and then make some sauteed veggies to go with it. The first step of cooking the duck breast is to render out most of the fat by cooking it skin-side down over low heat. Take some of the fat, use that to sautee the veggies while you crank up the heat and sear off the breast.
