OP what temperature did you use? Did you rotate the pan halfway through? The first thing I can think is that you didn't smooth the layer out to a uniform thickness which means it got uneven heating.

It can't be that hard since I see those giant cookie cakes at the mall and grocery store all the time.

If you don't want to make cookies into firm, smooth, tantalizing balls, make drop cookies like you would drop biscuits. It looks old fashioned.
