Does having sesame seeds on a bun actually make any difference? Does it noticeably improve taste or is it a texture thing?
I can taste them, it really depends on how fried your tastebuds are. I have some friends who work in a dust filled factory and they can't taste anything from inhaling dust all day. I can taste them, though.

I can also taste them, it's sort of a light nutty taste. It gets overpowered by ketchup or whatever else almost immediately, so it's not that important of an ingredient.

Yes.
I much prefer seeded buns.
I hate going to burger places that only use brioche buns because they're too sweet and greasy as fuck.
Sesame seeds have a distinct flavor IN MO
It's like....breadsticks, breadsticks with sesame seeds are way tastier than plain ones
The pizza place I go to has sesame seed crust, and I usually get that instead of garlic butter or something
OP here. Thanks guys. Well shit I guess >>9300764 explains it since I tend to put a lot of mustard on my burgers. I don't really taste sesame seeds, i can only smell and feel them. Glad to know it isn't just a gimmick though.
problem is they are so small you almost never bite on them

They add a small element of taste, in a good way. But I think their purpose is aesthetic - to signal the particular menu item is more on the luxury end of the offerings. The higher priced offerings come in seeded buns.
you taste them if you eat the burger upside down.
I think I can taste them on Arbys buns because I really like the flavor of their buns. At McDonalds I don't really get anything with them on it so can't say. But BK I like their buns too and they have the seeds. When I was a little kid I would have my Mom order my burgers or whatever with 2 bottom buns so there wouldn't be seeds because I was afraid of them.

do those grow a hamburger?

Literally the only thing they do is make the bun look better and more expensive.
