buying has nothing to do with ripeness. If they're firm like a cucumber, they're under ripe. If they feel like a.. shit, pickle? they're ready. If they feel like a squishy grape, you need to eat them or stew them immediately.

Everyone has their own preferences, but if you don't like tomato, I'm certain it's more the case that you've simply never eaten a *good* tomato. Consumers are used to supermarket varieties that are beautiful, plump ones that are watery to the taste. There's no discernable smell. Put them in a salad and any other dish and they just blend into the background. That's not to say that all produce in supermarkets is bad, but tomatoes above many other vegetables seems to have suffered when being grown for maximum yield.
