I have a friend vacationing in Hungary and he asked me what I want. Is there anything non-perishable that's unique to Hungary and hard/impossible to find in the US?

Try palinka or sliwowitz, also the hungarians are crazy for absinth.
And they have great smoked sausages, just try a couple of different sorts/brands, and while you're over there, do try some horsemeat dishes.

Definitely paprika! You can't even get decent, really, properly spicy paprika here in Austria. I always need to drive over the border to pick it up.
