No it's an airlock. It prevents oxygen from entering while allowing the carbon dioxide to escape.

I've recently gotten into Kvass making since it's some really low effort/tech brewing.
First batch was made with some shitty stale white bread I happened to have on hand. Wound up tasting... inoffensive. It definitely fermented all right, but there was basically no character other than fizzy and sour. It also strongly resembled highly anemic semen.
This time I used some proper toasted rye bread. Freaked out a bit when I pitched the yeast because absolutely nothing happened for over an hour. Pitched a second helping of yeast and it's bubbling along fine now. I'm kind of torn between refrigerating it tomorrow afternoon for regular kvass and just letting it go for several more days to see if I can get it fairly strong.
