Is it possible to find cheap shrimp if I dont live a city near a coast? Shrimp here is close to $10/lb in chicago. should I just alter my seafood tastes to a cheaper fish/crustacean?
You shouldnt be eating seafood if you're not from a local place.
I'm from maryland, a friend got a crab ravioli from a place in state college, PA and it was some nasty shit.

i dont buy seafood meals from restaurants, i buy them "fresh" from over the counter at the grocery deli. i'd assume the quality is better

Marylander here too. Baltimore.
Where are you?

you can buy large bags of iqf shrimps in asian supermarkets, it is pretty much at least as good as so called "fresh" shrimp from your deli, because shrimp always get flashfrozen after the catch and supermarkets and stores off the coast just defrost them to make em look fresh, which will start the decomposing process and limits your use
Seafood away from the coast SHOULD be expensive.
If you see cheap shrimp in Chicago, run the other way and wash your hands just in case.

If you buy head-on, it's cheaper per pound by nearly half.

I always stock up when I find frozen, deveined, tail-off, cooked shrimp. Literally no work involved in preparing it and the price point is usually the same as other frozen shrimp

no keep eating shrimps

i personally prefer them whole with only the head removed (because the enzymes that turn the meat mushy over time are situated in the head), always feels like the mechanically deveined/butterflied ones are less than pretty and often have some vein left.
but i definitely get that its convenient.
a 2kg bag of good qual iqf shrimp goes for about 18 here in western europe
