My personal notion is that we should eliminate all in-kind welfare programs and replace them with a negative income tax (aka just give people money) but I'm in the minority there. As it stands, people care that the resources that are expropriated from them shouldn't go to pay for steak and lobster, as that seems to indicate that the people getting this aid aren't in as miserable a situation as they might seem to be.

The reason SNAP and EBT isn't restricting food types is that not everyone can actually shop at groceries, but are urban poor getting food from 7-11 choices, where they aren't selling bulk rice, bulk dried beans, ham hocks to flavor the beans, etc. They sell hot dogs and canned ravioli.
Maybe when you graduate, you will be smart about social issues, or the working poor, but its not looking good right now for your mental health.

As someone who manages a grocery store and convenience store that both accept EBT, almost all EBT transactions at the grocery store are made by well-mannered people who purchase sensible things, lots of rice, beans, discount meats, whatever vegetable is in season or on sale, instant noodles, and other cheap filling meals while almost every single tranaction at the convenience store is a $3 sugary drink, a $6 bag of chips (sometimes two), and $10 of candy.
I'm far more comfortable selling someone a $10 steak or $12 lobster than I am selling them overpriced, processed sugar.

Just got SNAP after getting fucked over by the government and paying way too much in taxes. Feels good man

I know several poor people who use them responsibly. I also know a few niggers who scam the system.

I earn enough that I don't need EBT (never mind that I don't even come close to qualify for them). However, due to being physically disabled, I'm involved in advocacy for the blind and physically disabled and volunteer to help others who are disabled worse than I am. Part of my volunteering is helping people with sourcing income and/or food, often through EBT, including SNAP.
Through this, I meet several other disabled people, most of whom are in the lowest tiers of American poverty. Many of them need foodstamps to keep them fed. Some of them have known little else, being born into poverty in the first place as well as being disabled, so EBT is just a part of life to them. Others grew up (for lack of a PC term that doesn't sound fucking stupid) normal and middle class, became disabled later, fell into poverty as a result and are ashamed to need assistance. If they could work jobs that paid enough to support themselves, they would. Many work part time or do menial work. One guy I know, a former pilot, went blind and lost use of both legs in an accident. He can never work in his former field and currently answers the phone for a take-out pizza place friends of his family own. He's got a talent for vocal mimicry and is trying to break into voice-over work for cartoons and commercials. Until then, he needs his SNAP.

Anyway, I bring this all up because people always forget that the disabled make up the largest group of Americans who live in poverty. I have food stamps, so I eat steak a d crab legs once a month and shrimp 4-5 times a month. I also sell weed so I have pretty much what ever I want with minimal effort.

Don't know if it's been said, but any not pre-cooked food items (Besides frozen foods) can be purchased with EBT.

Also, protein powders that say "nutritional facts" and not "supplement facts" can be bought.

I'm on disability and have been for years, I refused to get foodstamps because I didn't want any extra reliance on the government and I was doing alright with by disability social security, roof over my head, was never "hungry". The thing was since I had low amounts to spend on food my nutrition was pretty poor, I didn't buy junk food, but I only bought things like starches, potatoes, pasta, beans. Fresh vegetables and fresh meat were a little out of budget so I'd buy frozen veggies and rarely ate meat.

I got EBT about five or six months ago, I've been using it to try to eat healthier, because my health was starting to decline from the bad diet.

I have nothing against social security and food stamp benefits, but I do have a problem with people who get $2,000 a month in child support and still want $400 in food stamps so that they can "be a mom" as a job, and have everybody else pay for their decision to raise a kid without being married. If you're disabled, use it, if you're just a piece of shit who made a bad choice you don't deserve it. (If they work and still can't afford healthy food that's different.)

Anyways, that's just my opinion since these threads are always shitflinging contests about who hates welfare the most.

There are other assistance programs with specific requirements. For example, Tennessee DHS will not give you ANY benefits if you have a child and the other absent parent is not paying child support. So, precedent exists. There's no reason they can't require mandatory home-ec classes that cover basic cooking and grocery shopping to maximize the dollar. It's just a matter of making those classes available. Bonus: A lot of these people wouldn't stay on food stamps if there was an obligation attached to them. Even 4 hours a month would be enough to run off half these people. They stay on it, because they only have to check in 1 time per year with DHS and say "no change in my income or assets." If you're not financially able to care for the child, it should go to the other parent if they want custody, or you shouldn't demand they give you thousands every month.

This is a touchy subject with me because my mother did it to my dad, she refused him visitation even though it was court ordered shared custody, and he had to work multiple jobs just to pay child support so she could drink wine coolers and gamble and complain about not having enough money while she never worked.
