Most people who 'drink whiskey' know fuck all about whiskey and think their £25 supermarket bourbon is quality because it costs more than Jack Daniels and has a faded effect label. These people are the same kind of morons who tell people who don't like whiskey that they need to try 'good whiskey': firstly the 'good whiskey' they recommend is usually shit and secondly even if it wasn't, to someone who isn't accustomed to drinking whiskey it's still going to taste foul because all they'll taste is a blast of 90 proof alcohol.

There's a reason the first step to learning about whiskey is spending a year going through bottom shelf low age statement bottlings until you can properly differentiate between them. imho, the most underrated aspect of enjoying most highly alcoholic beverages is the drinking technique. if you just chuck it down like water or beer the sting of the alcohol and the bitternis is just disgusting. you need to drink slowly, mix the whisky with your saliva 1:1 at the tip of the tongue, experience the precipitating tastes, feel the texture once you allow it to proceed further into your mouth, enjoy the warmth after swallowing etc. also for me whisky is like 70% aroma and only 30% taste, so take your time to smell it.

When I first tried whisky I fell for it hard. I never liked beer or vodka, I can't stand cognac or most rum. But I liked whisky. And I really liked some brands, and as time went on and I tried others I began to not like some of my old favourites. I used to really like Jameson's for example and now I can't stand it, and I wouldn't even wash my toilet with shit like Jack Daniels which used to be my go to.

It's not about being snobby it's just about trying stuff, and maybe every 10 years or so have another crack. Maybe whisky just isn't for you anon. I'm sure there's something you like drinking for the taste though.

For me currently it is the ardbeg, I love my whisky tasting like swamp soil and campfires.

Also be aware of the crazy variances between scotland and ireland and even moreso with the american and asian varieties.

But have you tried Scotch? Technically, it is a Whiskey, albiet from a certain region and under stricter guidelines. I felt the same way about whiskey as you until I tried it. Up until that point I had mostly only had the lower-mid basics such as Jack, Crown, Evan Williams, and their various flavors. I wasn't a fan and found whiskey fucking nasty. For my 21st birthday I got a bottle of Macallan 12yr blend, totally changed my opinion. Good whiskey is all flavor and little burn. Shit whiskey is fake-tasting flavor, and a shitty, nasty burn for awhile. Really, a mouthful of good whiskey should go down like water with a slight burn. Another decent+ whiskey to try for straight shots is Maker's Mark. Not a scotch, but damn good. All this being said, Whiskey isn't my number 1 option when it comes to alcohol, not even in my top 5, but there are tolerable options

most "top tier" whisky or whiskey is utter shit. Most mid tier whiskys will taste better than snob tier shit. There are some good expensive ones but whiskey/whisky snobs are as insufferable as wine snobs. Sometimes you don't have to pay a lot to get a good bottle. For about 15 american, Evan Williams 1783 is a solid choice. It's my go to.
