My family swears by shortening for its uses in baking, but I've never really bothered with it. Are there any recipes where it's essential?
Just makes stuff a little flakier than usual (pie crusts, biscuits). No need to stock it as a necessity if it's not your thing. Also useful as lube.

Next time you wanna cram your liverwurst down the collapsed and sallow folds of your mom's decimated gutter-hole, just get a healthy scoop of Crisco and grease up that meathog. So much cheaper than the lube that those oily Big Lube Jews want to sell you.

Have fun with your impending CANCER of some kind....CRISCO is literally cancer in a canister. All that artificial, fake vegetable oil is PUFA overload.

I don't think there are any recipes where you can't replace it with butter, but I like keeping butter flavored shortening around cause it's cheaper than butter and lasts a long time. Don't use shortening in frosting though, makes it taste disgusting.

No. Use lard instead. Vegetable shortening shouldn't exist anymore.
