I just realized that I've never bought buttermilk before. Whenever a recipe calls for it I just use the lemon juice/vinegar trick to make my own sour milk. Is there any real reason to buy it when it's so easy to substitute?
it's delicious

IMO, no.

The substitution you describe might be easily done, but it doesn't have the same taste or texture as the real thing.
You should try them side by side in your fav recipe. The fat content is different, the taste is tangier and the texture is better in real buttermilk.
it's like asking if butter is worth it when you've only ever used margarine. Maybe it's cheaper and easier, but most people will agree that real butter just has a deeper, richer flavor.
