This. Mexicans call them "Bollillos" and they're a derivative of French baguettes and Spanish breads.
We typically use them for sandwiches but cutting one up for soup is also common.

Besides a baguette being far longer, a french roll is a softer, especially on the inside, with a rougher outside. Also it doesn't use water and has to rest for a longer time.
