Trying to get into smoking was wondering what you can get away with for a diy smoker ?
Ive seen pictures online of ones made of wood , would wood be so bad if you are just using a hot plate to cold smoke your food?

Cold smoking is a thing, a separate technique really.
A wood box with a vent to control temp will get you by, but you can probably find a little chief smoker for less than it would cost to build one.

With the hotplate method, pretty much anything sealed with a vent on it. You could even build it out of mud.
