Is there a practical difference between vanilla extract and artificial

Is there a practical difference between vanilla extract and artificial vanilla extract? The artificial stuff costs half of what the natural stuff does. In my area.

Extract breaks down when exposed to heat. Reserve it for shakes, frostings, or puddings.

If your baking with it you likely won't be able to tell a difference. But in stuff like custards or ice cream the pure extract is noticeably better. My favorite thing to use is actually vanilla paste, it has vanilla seeds in it. It's great and not too expensive.
