The tartar is what makes Frisch's unique. Without it it'd be a wholly ordinary burger. In SE Indiana in a town called Sunman there's a low-profile dairy bar called B&G that makes Frisch's-style burgers better than Frisch's could ever hope to achieve. Their fries are surprisingly good too.

Sometimes it goes into a sandwich, like a fried grouper sandwich, just to moisten up the bread and bring in a little tang from the pickles and lemon. Anything fried seems to go with it, whether fried clams, fried shrimp, or even crab cakes.
