Here is my situation: For the last year and a half, my food

Here is my situation:

For the last year and a half, my food budget has been $50 per 3 months. I have to keep this up for about another year.

I've made it work so far with large bags of white rice, various extremely cheap dried beans, sometimes cans of vegetables, and, whenever I feel like treating myself, some ramen.

In addition to the strict budget, I have to make sure that any food requires no refrigeration, and has as long a shelf life as possible, due to constant uncertainty of living conditions and location, and in case I suddenly need to stretch what I have out over a much longer period than anticipated. I have plastic buckets and a small barrel I use for storage.

For reference, I live in the southern US, as south as south gets, and I weigh about 130lbs. The only realistic choice for nearby shopping is walmart.

For meals, I have been boiling the rice about a cup or so a day, adding in beans or mixed veggies of varying amounts, tossing in whatever spices I can get my hands on, and just slopping it into a giant sealable container I eat out of whenever I have the time.

I'm still alive, so it must be nutritious enough, but this is no way to live. Not for this long.

How could I be doing better with these limiting factors in mind? Could I get much more out of what I'm already buying, if I just put more effort into cooking? Are there better or at least more varied ingredients possible with a budget like this, and the shelf life/refrigeration restrictions?
>>
$50 for three months? Fuck, I just spent that much on food today

I find this budget completely preposterous and I refuse to work with it
>>
I'd recommend getting a fucking job.
>>
I live off PTSDbux and can afford more food than that.
>>
50 bucks for 3 months is ridiculous. You're doing about the best you can do. Beans and rice. If there's a farmers market nearby I'd try to find bulk produce for cheap, but most of what you find is gonna go bad without refrigeration.
>>
>>8895760
Check grocery store dumpsters.

I've been homeless before and you can find a lot of sealed food that's nearing expiration or expired(but it still safe to eat)
>>
On that budget you're pretty much going to have to shoplift, dumpster-dive and hit up a soup kitchen.
>>
Lmao I love these fucking replies.

I admire living minimally but ffs op are you on a library PC?

Your body is fully grown so you already got nutrients during infancy, the most important. But, ffs man you know what you need. After 2 years of no meat you need to get some fucking vitamin B12.

I'm more interested where you're living and why you have no money at all. Just ask the government for money or go get handouts from soup kitchens/churches ffs.
>>
>>8895755
Sorry, it's the absolute maximum I can set aside for food until about another year.

>>8895756
Please leave your judgement at the door. Maybe I have medical bills to pay and I'm doing the best I can already.

>>8895760
Honestly, I'd have tried to get government aid by now, but I can't even apply because they check the income of the people you live with, and I only have a roof over my head because of the kindness of my housemates who are good friends, who do a lot of shit under the table to get by and can't risk it.
>>
>>8895771
>>8895772
No no, i'm surviving just fine like this. It's just bland and a bit frustrating is all.

I made this thread for advice on spicing things up. It's not as bad as it sounds, probably.
>>
>>8895777
Churches give out free food, try those if you have too much pride to dumpster dive.

They usually give you canned vegetables, 2-3 cans of soup, a box of serial, and pbj here in MD
>>
>>8895777
>Maybe I have medical bills to pay
you don't, faggot. There are no debters prison in the U.S. and they can only garnish your wages with a judges approval. You obviously have no wages to garnish. fuck off.
>>
>>8895753
>$50 for 3 months
>I live in the southern US

Does 'US' in this case stand for 'Ugandan slums or something?
>>
>>8895789
>I made this thread for advice on spicing things up

That's exactly what we're giving you, since you can't afford anything else.

>>8895797
Considering his roommate situation I have to assume illegal immigrant.
>>
>>8895790
This, check out some churches for food donations, it's the best solution for your shitty situation for the time being.
>>
either get a job or another job, take out a credit card or something. Go to homeless feeding events if you are too much of a sperg for that.
a penny saved a penny earned, but this is a retarded system you've got going, born out of stupidity not necessity
>>
>came hoping for cooking and maybe some food shopping advice
>get life advice and fuckpoorpeople judgement instead

It's definitely 4chan here, but I assumed a niche board would be more, I dunno, on-topic.
>>
>>8895812
>how can I make half a day's salary at minimum wage feed me for three months?? (~_^)

figure your shit out, my man
>>
>>8895817
Did you not even read the original post all the way through?

In no way was I asking that. I said I'm already making it work, and wondering if anyone knew or had any ideas on how to cook better meals with what i'm already getting, or if better ingredients are possible within that budget.
>>
>>8895822
Have you tried getting a job?
>>
rice, liquid aminos, powdered eggs (should be cheaper), beans. scrounge for rice toppings in trash
>>
>>8895822
unless you're 5'3'' 130 pounds and a cup of rice a day isn't really working
>>
>>8895822
>>8895812
honestly it sounds like you're doing as well as you could be, I don't think there's much more you could do without going over budget
>>
>>8895812
>maybe some food shopping advice

You literally can't afford anything more than what you're already buying.
Even /ck/'s resident poorfags assume ~50/mo for food shopping

What you need is either more income or free food.
>>
Are you all retarded? This isn't what OP is asking at all.
>>
>>8895824
Powdered eggs should be cheaper? I hadn't even considered that.

The cheapest I've been able to find for eggs was a dozen for 80 cents with a particular brand that is only sometimes in stock. Also it's not great quality, so after I tried it a few different times and it didn't sit well, I gave up on the idea.

I'll look into this.

>>8895827
Huh? It's been working fine for over a year. I did say I add veggies and beans to the rice too, not just eating rice by itself of course. The amount of food I eat is plenty, no problems there whatsoever. I am just concerned about variety and blandness.

>>8895846
Right?
>>
>>8895822
No one cares about your stupid made-up budget. There's no reason anyone would only have that much money for food. If you are truly poor, you can qualify for food stamps. If you are in this country illegally and can't qualify for food stamps, I hope you starve. Even if you were undocumented, you could get handouts from churches and no matter what your situation is, you could definitely budget better.

If you're too stupid to figure it out on your own, you deserve to have to eat plain white rice for the next however long you decide you're gonna keep being stupid. This is a food and cooking board, not a board for starving Ethiopians subsisting off shit pies and dead flies. How do you even have internet or a computer/phone?

Neck yourself you retarded cunt.
>>
Potatos.
>>
>>8895852
you have to account for the loss of volume from dehydration
>>
>>8895852
I would suggest springing for some seasoning. That and dumpster diving are about all I can recommend.

Unlike these other anons, I am sorry to hear about your situation anon. You seem to be doing the best you can with it. Bless you, stay strong.
>>
>>8895860
You win. Everything you said and everything you assume is totally true and accurate. You caught me.

No need to linger in this thread anymore, you are victorious and may now move on to conquer other threads.
>>
I wanted to be helpful, but $50 for 3 months of food equates to about $16.66 a month, or roughly $3.76 a week. Subtracting tax, and you're down to $3.55 a week. I honestly don't think you CAN eat better for that little in this country; even your Africa-tier diet should be putting you in debt, since the 3 or 4 pounds of rice and beans you claim to eat a week should be running you at least $5.
>>
>>8895852
how do you afford to add vegetalbes to it?
at 16 dollars a month would a can of veggies not eat up about a dollar of that, and I assume you'd have them more than once a week

unless you have a freezer and are doing frozen, in which case it's more plausible
>>
>>8895883
>Subtracting tax,
What fucking state taxes food?
>>
>>8895898
>What is sales tax?
>>
>>8895898
...When you buy things in this country, there's a sales tax. Usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 to 8%.
Do you live in 1920's Russia or something?
>>
>>8895898
States that tax groceries (rate if not fully taxed): Alabama, Arkansas (3%), Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois (1%), Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri (1.225%), Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee (5.5%), Utah (1.75%), Virginia (1.5% + 1% local option tax), and West Virginia (5%).
>>
>>8895753
You said you lived in the south and the only feasible store is wal-mart, would a garden be feasible where you live?
>>
>>8895915
non processed food isn't taxed in a lot of places
>>
>>8895898
about 19 of them.

Arkansas, Illinois, South Dakota, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Utah, Tennessee, Virginia, Hawaii, Idaho, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Colorado, and North and South Carolina.
>>
>>8895915
>>8895918
there's no sales tax on groceries you mongs.

>>8895922
Shite red states tax food. Ok now I understand.
>>
>>8895879
I actually have a bigass container of garlic salt that has somehow lasted me for all this time so far. It's bent over pitifully from being near a stove for so long, and nearly empty now, but it's a trooper.

Kind of you to be concerned, but I really can't complain. I'm healthy and happy, just a bit frustrated with food. There are people much worse off.

>>8895883
>even your Africa-tier diet should be putting you in debt, since the 3 or 4 pounds of rice and beans you claim to eat a week should be running you at least $5.

I buy 20lbs bags of rice at a time, and it's like 6 bucks I think? The beans I get, mainly lintels, mung beans, and occasionally pintos, are close to as cheap, but of course not quite. I definitely don't exceed $50 per shopping trip, and i'm definitely staying within the 3month limit.

>>8895893
>how do you afford to add vegetalbes to it?

I found a particular brand of mixed vegetables that come in bulk sized cans, I don't remember the exact price offhand but I think it comes out to something like 4-5 cents an ounce? Either way, once I crack a can open, I have to commit to using it up, but it's well worth the price.

are you hitting 800 calories a day?
Bean amount is still unannounced but assuming it is the same as rice you're at like 500 a day, which is not a whole hell of a lot.
Maybe switch in some canned fruit? probably calorie dense, although may cost more
>>
you're well beyond poverty, at a point it really does seem almost suspect how little money you have. you should consider selling drugs, it would be an easy buck if you play your cards right amigo.
>>
Rice and beans are your staple...

I lived out of my car for several months, slept in parks and such.

Forage: Find out what local plants are edible, but more important than that, find out the ones that will make you sick or kill you. Google is great, but seriously, just go to a state or national park and ask a ranger, they love talking about that kinda shit.

Fish: obviously you don't work, so you have plenty of time, and that's mostly all fishing requires. A spool of line and some hooks will take a few bucks of rice money but more than pay for themselves in protein. Stick fish or hand fish till you can get a pole. Collect empty milk jugs and bottles and set yourself up some hugging rigs. Use roadkill for bait, catfish is a good oily meat to fill in where your starches fail you.

Trap: instructions online. city squirrels and birds are desensitized and easy to snare, if you are more rural than you have access to rabbits possums coins and such, harder to trap but better eating.
>>
>>8895972
I have no earthly idea, and can't imagine why I would even keep track of such a thing. I eat when I feel hungry and stop when I stop feeling hungry. I don't count calories.

I feel healthy enough, and I'm certainly not starving, so I must be doing alright.

Fruits are a luxury I can ill afford, however.

>>8895991
I was vague on the finer details of my circumstances because I didn't really want to discuss them, but the fact is that I have the food budget as I outlined it for the time frames, I have the one reliable shopping option, and I don't have the free time to go full hobo.

I appreciate the sentiment, though.
>>
>>8896022
are you immobile?
how can you not know why somebody living off of a meal a day wouldn't want to count calories...
>>
>>8895753
have you considered sucking dick for extra cash?
>>
>>8896022
Nigger you fucking said you eat a cup of rice, that isn't start when you're hungry and stop when you're full

bullshit claim and bullshit thread.
>>
>>8895755
This. I just spent three times that today on groceries.

The cheapest I've ever been able to get our family of three by on was $25 dollars a week. That was our food budget for nearly a year, about 9 years ago during the heavy recession (due to a big company closing, about half our town was jobless).
>>
>>8896026
I'm not sure what you're trying to say, here. I eat several times a day. I only cook once a day, but it lasts for more than one meal.

I eat when hungry.

>>8896032
I think you're confused. I said I have about a cup or so per day, and that's off the top of my head because I cook my food in batches that are big enough to last two days, sometimes longer, and I only know that the rice comes out to about a cup per day because I have to measure it to cook it properly, and I cook two cups of it at a time as the base to add the other stuff into.

Once the pile of stuff is in a sealable container, I eat at it until it's gone over a couple of days, as I'm hungry, as feels natural.

I have no idea what "claim" you think i'm trying to make, but you seem to be looking for a reason to get angry, and it's quite puzzling.
>>
>>8896051
It wasn't even for a family, it was ME. A cup of coffee, lunch, espresso, a bottle of wine, and some sausages I had in the fridge the value of which I calculate at $5 plus some random ingredients I didn't even count.

I once made $60 last a month but I thought that was a pretty big deal, $50 for 3 months is not possible in a first world country
>>
I fucking hate poor people, this thread really reaffirms my hatred. The malnutrition is getting to you, Paco.

I was in a similar situation as you. Oats and potatoes are a godsend. Buy some milk ocassionally if you can afford it. I think you can live indefinitely on those alone.
>>
>>8896060
I think the claim you made about the cost of your food is bullshit
>>
White rice is the absolute rock bottom of poverty eating. I always wondered how the homeless were able to afford computers/iPhones to shitpost on 4chan but not food. Are you an illegal immigrant? Regardless, there isn't much lower you can go than rice for every meal. Go to a soup kitchen or food pantry. $50 for the three of months is insane. Homeless nigger beggars make that in a day panhandling. Get help, OP. Do you have a family?
>>
>>8896066
>$50 for 3 months is not possible in a first world country
I guess you can think of the deep south in the US as its own contained third-world-within-a-first-world-country.

Rice and beans, man. Dunno what to tell you.

>>8896074
>I'm gonna spend your quarterly grocery budget tomorrow on burritos and beer for Cinco de Mayo

>>8896081
Oats are great, but my store stopped selling the really good cheap brand of oats I could afford. It was a sad day when that happened, and now all they have is like 1 dollar per pound, and that's highway robbery.

He said he lives with roommates, so no family. I would love to know what this guy does with all his time because it's apparently spent on something other than panhandling as mentioned earlier in the thread. OP's being pretty stingy with personal details though
>>
>>8896104
>he
Nice assumptions. Op is the first lady of Mexico, her husband was murdered by a secret paramilitary death squad in league with the CIA and the Mexican Army before he could give a speech announcing a major revision to the policies concerning the drug war and relations with the United States, and she was framed for the murder and went into hiding with the assistance of a Colombian human rights activist and her former maid's nephew. After an increasingly elaborate sequence of events culminating in the murder of the Mexican Secretary of Defense and the invasion and total destruction of the entire neighborhood of Tepito D.F., where she was hiding out, she fled to the Deep South of the USA in order to plot the liberation of her daughter who was kidnapped by the same CIA agents who set up the murder of her husband.
>>
>>8896103

>>
OP, wherever does the all your free time go? You're obviously unemployed and I'm wondering why you aren't spending that time panhandling or dumpster diving.
>>
>>8896120
As we all know /ck/ is mostly women so this explanation adds up
>>
>>8896104
>OP's being pretty stingy with personal details

The details are whatever your imagination wants them to be.

Maybe I have a crippling substance addiction and I only allot myself so little money for food so I can keep scratching that itch.

Maybe I spend the rest of my cash obsessively collecting vintage action figures and video game cartridges from failed gaming systems.

Perhaps my beloved little sister has amassed a metric fuckton of debt and I'm just barely keeping her afloat by sacrificing every penny I make except just enough to keep myself and my vehicle fueled to get me to my deadend job I hate 7 days a week for one more year so we can both finally breathe and move on with our lives.

Maybe my mom has ultracancer and I'm paying out the ass to have tribal medicine men sent in from kalamazoo to ward off her evil spirits because conventional medicine isn't helping.

Who knows?

Who cares?

Basically I'm saying I do care about your situation to the extent that any anon here can, there are so many fascinating little things that I'm invested now.
>>
Yeah, at this point any additions just for the sake of variety would need to be free, so churches and food banks are your friend. I'd also suggest craigslist, I have sometimes seen people give away free canned food they don't want and you might even beg there and get something. If possible maybe you can find or get fresh herbs?

I wouldn't discount actual stores either, if you know one that has sales ("ethnic" markets are especially good for this you can sometimes get large bags of fresh fruit/veg that is expiring for a dollar or less. Same with flavor packets, canned foods, etc.
>>
>>8896143
Also a possibility, definitely. But you don't want to be a judgy jason, right? Surely you give people the benefit of the doubt and more quickly assume they're only just crack addicts rather than autistic and lazy? Surely?

After spending your three month budget in a single day. Sorry OP. The best advice I can give you is to hit up local farms, drive out to the countryside if need be. It's getting into season now, many plots run u-pick operations where you can pick your weight in fruit or veg for dollars a pound. Learn how to can your own food, and spend the next month or so canning your year's supply. Hell of a lot cheaper than buying fresh or frozen from the supermarket regularly.

And how much of that is actual passenger rail as opposed to cargo that stops in the middle of the desert and will shoot trainhoppers for tresspassing?

Oh, it wasn't a passenger line.

So if any one of these is dismissing actual advice I'll agree with you, but who says he's not taking the real advice and just responding to other things? I'm not reading through these a second time so if anyone wants to show where he was being a bitch about actual advice I'll probably just be slightly disappointed that I believed that OP was the good guy here

You should have said "given a bj to a trucker to get a few miles down the road.

I would have believed that as actual advice.

Came in here to say eggs got me though most of my shitty grad school money times; however, I had more than 50 bucks.

Big thing of cumin or other seasoning of your choice will probably go the furthest for your money.

Lentils maybe instead of rice? Recall you said Wal-Mart was your only option, if you had an ethnic food store I'd say you'd be okay but probably not.

Otherwise I agree with the foraging anon. I don't buy the bullshit that you don't have enough time to do that. You have internet access. Wake up at 5 a.m., the sun's out earlier every day.

I don't remember how much canned tuna is in bulk, but that can stay non-refrigerated.
>>
You are full of shit or you don't know how math works. Also I don't understand how you can eat garbage over and over without saying fuck it and going to your county agency for food share or the salvation army at least. Rice is cheap but not THAT cheap unless you are copping a deal. Never mind additions like beans or veg. Wal-Mart is set not set up to accommodate your austere budget. If you have the equipment I'd recommend getting a turkey and using every last scrap and drip of broth to flavor your shitty rice. Catfish and weird pork parts are cheap as well. Did I mention chicken feet?

You are either trolling or an ignorant motherfucker. Lowest I've ever seen is a dollar a day and they were eating shit on top of someone basically clipping coupons as a full time job
>>
>>8896793
Yeah because raging opiate addicts are the best budgeters and meal planners amongst us. Go drink bleach.
>>
Hippie?
>>
>>8895753
OP the best I could feasibly come up with for $50 in 3 months is about 800 calories worth of rice every day, with nothing else
800 calories a day is not enough to keep someone 130 lbs, you will very quickly lose weight and die
also "a cup of rice" is like 200 calories, theres no way youve been eating that little and managing to not sleep for 18 hours a day while also losing weight
>>
>>8895925
This is the best solution.

>>8895753
What the fuck? Plant some fucking potatoes. Tomatoes, beans, squash, onions, fucking anything. Don't have land? Who gives a shit. Use planters or make a guerilla garden someplace shitty. In the south, the state governments may hate poor people, but the Church doesn't. Why don't you go see if you can start a garden in collaboration with local churches to grow vegetables for low-income members?
>>
>>8895771
Grocery store near me dumps bleach on their thrown out food so nobody can eat it.

Interesting story actually. They're currently being sued over that by the ACLU.
>>
I've been in the same situation as you OP wrt both addiction and food but I never stood around just waiting to die like you seem to obnoxiously be determined to do despite the litany of good advice people have given you. Schizophrenic hobos have better common sense and initiative than you do.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you acting so paralytically stupid and helpless? Are you even sentient? Good luck dealing with withdrawal with a cup of rice you fucking faggot. Hope you enjoy flavoring your shit, with piss and vomit you fucking imbecile.

>>8897071
Don't worry, just use some spices that you can't afford and that shitty pot of rice will be fit for a king! Don't bother getting a job or welfare or dumpster diving since that would require actually leaving the house. The real solution to your problems is just getting creative in the kitchen!

Enjoy your malnutrition.

This.

Government food banks are a thing. If you're typing here on 4chins then google it with your city in the search bar. Then go get food.
>>
get a bottle of duck sauce. our some sauce. mix some in, good stuff. little salt, pepper. butter. i could eat that a while. then get some dollar burgers our egg rolls, maybe a small piece of cake.
>>
>>8897145
then canned food is cheap, you can eat that a while. long as your not doing manual labor for 40 hrs a day.
>>
>>8895846
No one is required to give op the exact anser he wants. Especially when a one day gig off of craigslist would double his food budget.
>>
What state are you in? You should start scavenging for wild veggies.
That what I do.
>>
>>8895789
Of course its bland, idiot.. If youre doing fine then realize that and be happy. You arent going to find anything better without jumping through impractical hoops that isnt worth it. Ive been in the exact spot you for years but not nearly as strict. You can get cheap foods such as peanut butter, potatoes, tomato sauce, bulk popcorn, you can make bread without yeast in the microwave and it tastes pretty good. Most of those things will take your price up for cost per calorie. What i do is buy white rice and lentils.. Lentils dont need to be soaked and cook just like rice. They also have a high protien ratio. All you need is the carbs from rice and protien and fat from legumes and a multi-vitamin. If you are fine with rice and legumes all you need is a cheap multi vitamin. You can survive on little calories if you are inactive. A good indicator of you health is you general mood and feeling. If you feel fine when you are fasting that is a good sign that you are in good shape.. many people talk about this kind of thing when they fast.. It means your body is in a good spot at that moment and it is healing and operating in the most optimized fashion.
>>
>>8895753
Get your hands on leafy greens instead of canned vegetables. With rice and beans that's actually an extremely healthy diet.
>>
>>8895753
Cook your rice with stock and add butter when done (you can store butter at room temp) for a poor man's risotto.
Buy pasteurized milk in bulk if you don't mind drinking lukewarm or hot milk.
>>
>>8895753

Thats 70c a day that's worthless unless you're in somalia, are you in somalia?

You can't do anything fucking idiot guy. Potatoes, onions, eggs and flour don't need a refrigerator but you can't really afford any of this so buy 50 $1 dollar cans and eat half a can a day
>>
I'm the anon who suggested foraging, fishing, and trapping.

When he said he was unwilling to "go full hobo" I'm also the one who suggested getting intentionally arrested.

OP is full of shit IMO. When you are hungry, actually hungry, you do what needs to be done to feed yourself.

One final suggestion, just in case this isn't bullshit and he has some carats situation that is beyond anything I can put mind to at the moment...

You say you are happy with rice and beans and just want more flavor. You say your only store available is Walmart...

You know what is small? Spice bottles and seasoning packets.

You know what is big enough to fit several seasoning packets and spice bottles unobtrusively? Your pockets.

You know who is underpaid, over worked, and could not give two shits about people shoplifting from their stores? Walmart employees.

I'm fully expecting some half ass reason why he can't do this either, but then I'm done with the thread.

When you are hungry you will do what it takes to feed yourself. Stop role playing, there are people out there who are actually hungry.

there isn't any "advice" to give other than trying to get some food from soup kitchens to make it so you can buy more shit with your budget. you're already at your maximum on that money.

why don't you or other anons understand this? you're stretched as far as you can go.
