anyone tried a kale smoothie?
I make fruit and spinach smoothies at home most days but keep hearing that kale is the way to go. but I also keep hearing it tastes horrible, like seriously bad. Even Rogan, who swears by them, says it tastes like shit
is it the taste or the texture that kills it?
>pic probably not related
I tried it once. It's no worse thsn actually eating raw kale in a salad, but it's not something I'd want to drink again. The texture's like lettuce but it's very bitter.
If you like spinach you'll be able to tolerate/maybe even like the taste but the texture is like chewing on plastic grass.
Maybe my blender just sucks, but I've noticed that kale makes my smoothies very gritty.
Throw some blueberries in it, it'll cut the kale flavor big time
I have a kale smoothie just about every day. Just cut the leaves and discard the stock. Add a couple glops of peanut butter
I think it tastes pretty similar to broccoli. What you should really add into your diet is nettle

For smoothies, blanched collards is way better. After a few minutes blending the collards dissolves into the smoothie. Plus collards are more nutritious than kale. And no, i didn't turn black eating collards.

Mmm, nettle. Almost at picking stage in my neck of the woods.

that almond butter looks fucking unappetizing
Stick with spinach in smoothies, I'd say.
Kale is best cooked slightly, I think. Even in a cold salad, I prefer kale that has been blanched or steamed enough to brighten the color and make it more tender.

if you throw in a pinch of salt it will help cut the bitter taste of the kale.
ultimately, spinach is the superior option for smoothies.

I agree, unless maybe you have a really nice blender that's going to liquefy the kale. Otherwise there will be chunks of 'lettuce' in your smoothie which is not enjoyable. Spinach gets pulverized easily and the flavor disappears.
