What's the best way to make a hot dog? A friend of mine insists on boiling them. I feel like grilling it is infinitely better.
>>
>>8686148
Grilling is better, boiling is easier.
>>
as long as it isnt microwaved i guess

>>8686148
I slice down the middle and toast them in a toaster oven if i dont feel like firing up my charcoal grill, which is objectively the best way to cook a hot dog. But boiled is better for certain things like chili dogs
>>
>>8686148
Define best. Fastest? Easiest? Tastiest?

Boiling them is certainly quick and simple but IMHO they taste much much better grilled or seared in a pan.
>>
>>8686167
I was thinking based on taste. I simply don't think a boiled hot dog has nearly as much flavor as a grilled one. They don't really become juicy from the boiling.
>>
I always cook mine in a vegetable steamer, but grilled are best if you are able to do so.
>>
>>8686148
If you boil them they'll crack and lose all their taste. You're supposed to keep them in hot water you mongoloid.
>>
>>8686148
put ketchup on them
>>
>>8686148
I either grill them or boil them. Pan-fried tastes like shit.
>>
>>8686183
So they keep all the vitamins?
>>
>>8686185
That's the pic he sent me. I swear, I've never boiled a hot dog in my life. I always grill. The proper way for that is just heating them in water?
>>
>>8686192
I have no idea, I just didn't like boiled hot dogs making the bun a little soggy.
>>
>>8686187
This raises another question, what are the best condiments to top a hot dog with? I can eat some higher end hot dogs with nothing on them, but for shittier dogs I like spicy brown mustard.
>>
>>8686148
in your BUTT

HAHA :D
>>
>>8686226
My go-to is brown mustard, onions, and pickle relish.
>>
Microwave
>>
>>8686254
Nobody on /ck/ unironically microwaves their hot dogs. End this meme.
>>
>>8686258
How do you ironically microwave a hot dog?
>>
>>8686266

If your goal is to make the food as shitty as possible, deliberately.
>>
>>8686267
I'm pretty sure microwaving a hot dog makes them expand and become all sorts of strange most of the time.
>>
>>8686198
Hot water but not boiling.
>>
>>8686236
What does "brown" mustard mean? Dijon or something?
>>
>>8686226
If you are grilling then I hope you are slathering them in a BBQ sauce of some sort, in which case that's all you need. Just pick it off with a fork and eat

For boiled: yellow mustard, chili, shredded cheese, seared onions
>>
>>8686148

I like to wrap them in tinfoil and toss them in the oven. It's something between boiled and grilled.
>>
>>8686226
Yellow mustard, sauerkraut, raw diced white onion
>>
>>8686325
Slather it and grill it with the BBQ sauce on it? Or apply afterwards?

>>8686326
Never heard of this one. Sounds decent.
>>
>>8686226
sauerkraut, sauteed mushrooms and onions, and cream cheese
t. WAfag
>>
>>8686334

Add pickled hot peppers and mustard relish and you got a winner.
>>
>>8686340
while grilling yeah continually coat it with BBQ sauce, maybe do one good slather about 30 seconds before you pull it if you want a lot of sauce
>>
>>8686346
More like, you got a WEINER haha get it?
>>
>>8686320
It's similar to Dijon, but more coarse and slightly spicier. It also lacks the white wine.
>>
>>8686364

No. I get it, but still no.
>>
>>8686148
microwave until it becomes leather
>>
Boiling hot dogs is for absolute degenerates.
>>
>>8686369
Quality meme, friendo.

>>8686440
Thank you. Couldn't agree more. It's lazy and it tastes like shit.
>>
>>8686148
Depends on the casing. I'll admit that grilling anything tastes better, but you didn't buy natural-casing hotdogs to make them taste identical to Gwaltney turkeydogs.
regular ass, boil them. you'll cover them with fucking condiments, they just have to get hot and stay hot in a group
quality, any pure beef sort? pan fry, and don't bastardize with anything except maybe a little mustard

pretty much this. always always throw them on the bbq or at least a frypan if you want taste. Boiling them is just the lazy way.
>>
chili dogs with chopped onion and mustard
>>
>>8686148
Really, the best way is to smoke them over hickory for about an hour.

It's just that it's not really practical unless you're in the middle of cooking something else on your smoker.
>>
>>8686148
Slowcook them
>>
>>8686148

Grill when it's warm out. If it's too cold, then you cook them in a skillet with some water. The water boils/steams the dogs, then when the water evaporates you let them get just a little bit pan-fried.
>>
>>8686148
Bake them.
It taste like they came straight from the gas station.
>>
>>8686816
I love making hotdogs over a fire. Honestly the only thing that beats grilling in my opinion.

They're both awful. Hotdogs are almost intolerable if they aren't browned, at least to me.

microwave.
>>
>>8686148
Your friend is right boiling is the best way.

Just remember, hot dogs are already cooked so the goal is to heat it.

Wait until the water reaches boiling then turn down to simmer. Now put the dogs in until they float. Should take around 5 minutes.

Now place the hot dog into the steamed bun.

Next put the toppings on in this order: yellow mustard, green relish, onion, tomato wedge, pickle spear, sport pepper, and celery salt.

Remember to dress the Dog and not the bun.

it's traditional, except you're supposed to do it with onions salt and garlic, not just water
>>
Question

why DO we boil them?

Based on this thread, it seems it's the simpler action among the other methods.

But why does one boil it? does the method separate some of the fat and salt and into the water?

My mother taught me to boil them and not the microwave, says you can taste the difference and microwave just comes wrong.
>>

>>
>>8691929
Your mother taught you wrong. Microwaving beats boiling in flavor, texture, and convenience. It's still a low-tier way to cook dogs, but it gets a worse rep than it deserves
>>
>>8686258
My brother does this...And he doesn't use a plate or bother disinfecting the microwave afterwards.
He also thinks he cannot be bothered from playing Halo and pisses in bottles...

>>8691929
I think the logic of Boiling Hot Dogs or well keeping them in Hot Water for a short simmer stems from Hot Dog carts, as that's how they keep the Hot Dogs tasting alright for hours at a time.

You can't forget that a lot of our foods are simply comfort food. Hot Dogs exist so you can feed a family of four on pocket change.

Obviously if flavor is what you're going for Grilling them or dare I suggest Deep Frying them is the best way possible.
>>
>>8686161
Pan fried take just as little time or less and you just gotta jiggle the pan a bit so no single side gets charred. And the taste is infinitely superior.

>>
i mean the best way to cook almost anything is to pan fry it
>>
>>8686226

>>
>>8686148
Sous vide. Finish with a good sear.
>>
>>8686177
Boiling objectively waters down the flavour of anything boiled.

It is one of the worst ways to cook things.

However, by a small degree of difference in method, the sous vide is one of the best ways to cook things. It uses the 360° heat of the boiling water, AND locks in all the flavour. Once done, fry/grill briefly to brown the outside slightly. However, I would hesitate to do this with a hot dog, unless it was a REALLY good quality, fresh sausage/wiener. Most of the stuff in/on a regular commercial wiener you'll WANT to boil/fry away.
>>
The REAL question is:

Chicken,

Beef,

Pork,

or "Original"?

What is the best wiener?
>>
>>8692529
I said sport pepper not sports pepper you illiterate imbecile
>>
>>8692785
A hotdog is already cooked when you buy it dumbass
>>
>>8686148
poaching is a way to cook through "fresh" sausages that are well, raw. Cooking a raw sausage only by grilling was a good way to burn the outside, have them split, before the inside was good and done. So why do people still continue to boil the ones that are "fully cooked" links? Habit.

If it is your preference to have a soft dog, without a cooked natural casing, that's your own deal. Most hot dogs don't have natural casing anymore, either. So, yea.

Best is probably a combination of both methods. I like my dogs pretty well down, and if grilling outside, I like them even charred. Is it best? No, it's my preference.
>>
>>8692956
You enjoy a "chardog" nuthin wrong with that

Not that anon; however I throw mine in a cast iron skillet and throw it in the broiler. I still prefer the flavor from grilling, but the broiler is a 'toss it in and fo'get about it' method that's just as easy as boiling (and doesn't produce the consistency of flaccid dick) .
>>

You don't have to look at it though. Put hotdogs in water, put in high heat, fap, and they're ready when you get back. Fire and forget.

2 techniques with different yet equally delicious results.

1. steam it with beer for awhile (any beer will work other than porter or stout) and then give it a quick flash in a pan for a nice crust

2. cook on medium low in butter for 20 minutes on each side (40 in total).

In both cases you can use the remnants to sauté a ton of garlic and onions, then reduce them for a nice onion slurry topping.
>>
>>8686836
Latex condoms melting point is probably more toward 300°F where boiling temp for water is around 200°F I think
>>
Cook them in the oven until medium rare
>>
>>8686148
Grilled if you plan to eat it with rice or some shit. Boiled is only good if you're eating it on a bun. Grilling dog's get too dry for that dry bun.
>>
>>8696191
you have garbage tastes, please don't post in the future
>>
>>8696198
I bet you like ketchup and mustard on your wiener.
>>
Steamed. Plump and juicy and doesn't get shriveled; the hot dog too.
>>
>>8696206
Mate you don't like grilled dogs on buns, you have absolutely no right to talk about any hotdog tastes. Either you cook your dogs to shit at a high temp (which it sounds like the way you describe them) or your tastebuds are malfunctioning.
>>
>>8692956
Nah poaching hotdogs removes a lot of the salt, and if they're lower quality the preservatives which improves flavor. Plus a lot of people don't have grills.
>>
>>8696227
You're so primitive. You must enjoy your salad drenched in semen sauce. Do you like ketchup with your fries too? lol
>>
Please consider skipping the hot dog for a superior bratwurst, Italian or Polish sausage instead.
Hot dogs are such low tier food it barely matters how its cooked, you cant really make it great no matter what. A better sausage is still reasonable in cost, even for you guys.
>>
>>8696284
Most of these "critics" are poor fuckers who pretend to be classy. What do you expect? They drench their dog and bun in sauce and says the hot dog was of quality.
>>
>>8692576
>Hot Dogs exist so you can feed a family of four on pocket change
No, they exist to give people walking down the street or on a break a quick meal. Hot dogs are a fairly cost inefficient way of feeding a family. You also capitalize weirdly. Don't capitalize stuff that isn't either a proper noun or at the beginning of a sentence.
