If your going to go for a zin, you might also enjoy a primitivo. The grapes have similar DNA, but the primitivo harks back to the 17th century and has a more 'rustic' vibe.
Some people compare the taste to 'dirt', but mature palates will appreciate the earthy astringency as a fine compliment to the sweet notes in the ragu.
