I personally don't care for the tapioca pearls, but after seeing the recipe, I do enjoy the flavor of "milk tea" without the tapioca.

>Brown sugar.
>Whole milk / half and half / heavy cream.
>Pour over ice.

It's really amazing how the type of sugar has such a huge effect on the flavor of the finished product.
