You're offended by using what seem like upscale words to describe what you consider commonplace foods, probably because you encounter this sort of thing in restaurants that you consider pretentious, fake-upscale and overpriced. In English we're totally retarded about Italian words. When it comes to food words we consistently use the plural word as a singular. We use the word for pepper to refer to a type of salami. Beyond the language we do retarded things to Italian food as well, like putting shrimp/chicken in Alfredo sauce and covering chicken cutlets with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. To say nothing of what we've done to fucking pizza. And the fact that nearly every supermarket in America sells ravioli in fucking cans!
