Why are beans on toast the poster food when it comes to mocking british cuisine?
I mean I get that the Brits eat a lot of weird shit, but there is plenty of tasty food, too.

I got a can of baked beans on a whim and didn't know what to do with them. Didn't feel like cooking tonight, so
>lel, let's try it

I stand corrected, bretty gud.
>>
they seem to be the current one because toast sandwiches and jellied eels were getting old.
>>
>>8523140
Because it's convenient, cheap sustenance that doesn't require any actual cooking skills. And while it is actually pretty tasty it's the kind of depressing meal a uni student or lonely bachelor would whip up. There's a grimness to it that people frequently associate with British cuisine.
>>
American sugar baked beans barely resemble heinz tomato baked beans, so there is a misconception about how this meal tastes.

It's also pretty drab and one dimensional without lots of doctoring.
>>
>>8523140
It doesn't seem like it'd be amazing but it's probably miles ahead of eel pie and toast sandwiches.

I think you could roughly equate the beans on toast dish to an American grilled cheese sandwich, it's a plain piece of junkfood that's cheap and has some broad appeal.

>>8523174
>It's also pretty drab and one dimensional without lots of doctoring.
So is a grilled cheese, I want at least a slice of ham and some mustard in there.
>>
>>8523178
The American grilled cheese evokes childhood nostalgia for many. It's something your mother might have made for you, whereas beans on toast is what you make when you're out on your on and don't have mommy to cook for you.
>>
>>8523187
>It's something your mother might have made for you
In that sense, I feel Mac & Cheese is a better dish, because it can very easily be improved by the addition of lots of fresh ground pepper (and maybe some fried ham/bacon, if you want to get it fancy).
>>
Them roomies aren't eating any of that chipotle sourdough, I'm fixin to toast, i'm fixing to heat beans, oh it's comin.

I have some super multigrain whet bread, but I expect the sourdough to go better with beans.
>>
Beans on toast is lame. Over easy eggs on top of beans with toast on the side is far superior. Even just beans with toast on the side is superior.
>>
>>8523187

that's entirely tied to your own experience. i have never made myself beans on toast, only my mum or the fat ladies who ran aftercare did it for me
>>
>>8523174
>>8523187

I can cook just fine, and I actually have the kitchen full of better food. I just tried it on a whim, like I said, expected nothing and it was fine.

Not unlike perlmeni just with sour cream or a plate of scrambled eggs, simple but tasty. Not amazing, but tasty.

>>8523203
A fried egg along with them sounds really good though.
How about sausage?

A big plate of scrambled eggs with cheese can be pretty damn satisfying on a cold weekend morning, where you have ample time to make yourself a hot meal for breakfast.
>>
>>8523392
This is exactly how you have beans on toast, the stronger the cheddar the better. I don't have it often because it's carb city, but it's fucking delicious and cheap.

Top fucking wew lad. Did you bang?
>>
>>8523786

it didn't help that there was a lot of american and canadian made media about how dumb americans are coming out around that time. idiocracy, bowling for columbine and shit. there is this narrative of excess and superficiality that was only reinforced by the big differences between contemporary bong and burger media, especially tv.

there are also behavioural differences between us which i think alienate us from each other. like you're well-known for being friendly, but i generally have found that to feel quite affected, and i have had a lot of awkward interactions with americans especially in big cities. more hostility than i might have been expecting.

also when you hear 'oh you're from london? fascinating! i've been to paris' for the 20th time your benefit of the doubt powers do tend to wane.

and while political leanings don't determine intelligence they do relate to educational levels so it's perfectly acceptable to bring that up as she was someone who thought we were all knuckle dragging retards from rural alabama who couldn't spell "strawberry" if their lives depended on it. The stereotype abroad for Americans is that we are right wingers and it is true that our political leanings are more right wing in comparison but we also have things like socialists and progressives. Obama would be right of center in Europe, he's practically a commie over here
>>
>>8523140

Because farting out old stereotypes is one of the few things people can do on the internet.

It's like saying americans are all 500lb lardasses in motorized trolleys shopping at SHART IN MARTS when they rock the olympics and aren't even the fattest nation

It's like saying british has bad teeth when statistically they have some of the best teeth in terms of cavities per person

or french being pussies in ww2 etc.

It's just a tired memetic, reinforced by shitposting mongoloids on the internet.
>>

That's the thing, you're more likely to find the shittiest Americans in the big cities, and some of the shittier cultures.

There's this segment of New York culture which basically revolves around just being kind of a rude asshole just because. I talked to a Texan guy who felt kind of hurt on his visit there, I'd greet people in a friendly manner, hold the door for people, take off his hat, etc. He wanted to be friendly and courteous like he usually was but lots of people just looked at him like he was a fucking freak.

>>8523887
>they do relate to educational levels
To a point, I mean, only a complete mouth breather who slept through history class would be a communist in this day and age.

>The stereotype abroad for Americans is that we are right wingers and it is true that our political leanings are more right wing in comparison
If anything I think it's because America is one of the few places where the constitution has real life legal weight, where you can actually take your government to court for violating them (and have a chance of winning). Lots of places have a constitution of sorts but it's rarely more than symbolical outside of MAYBE free speech, for instance, no other country in the western world has something like the Second Amendment.
Many left leanings have a much more collectivist approach to rights.

>Obama would be right of center in Europe
I'd argue that's because Euro politics are really warped.
Also he really wasn't very functionally different from Bush

>>8523899
>or french being pussies in ww2 etc
That one never ceases to amaze, they just kind of fucked up and didn't properly ready themselves (the Maginot line was kind of a halfbaked idea), but even under Nazi occupation they royally stomped Fascist Italy's colon and conquered some land from them even. They were never really cowardly.
>>

Basically the Brits invented the template for modern industrialized capitalism, which the Americans ran with after WWII. A problem with that world view is that while it leads to power and affluence it has kind of a grim Protestant view toward the pleasures of the table. We insult British teeth because they are ugly, and they are.

That graphic only shows that Brits have less cavities and missing teeth. Completely different things.

Brits moved the goalpost. Not my fault.

Also, I want to see actual sources instead of that one stupid image regurgitated over and over again.

>hating on beans on toast and chip butties

Damn, what's wrong with you anon's?
>>
>>8527532
Hey, I'm perfectly open to the idea of the beans on toast, because that'd be some actual interesting flavor and texture, along with some nutrition.

It's just that the chip butte seems like the blandest thing ever, and I can't ever see a reason for it.
If I have hot and fresh tasty fries, I would want to eat them now and as they are, because when they cool down and get soggy they're no good any more, and the impression I get of the chip butte is that people make it with left-over fries, and I get this horrible mental image of cold mushy and soggy potato between two slices of bread.
I mean do people seriously cook fries for the purposes of making a butte or what?
>>
>>8527558
When I go the chip shop my family always makes buttered bread purly for chips and not nessacarily left over ones.

It's the butter and the texture of the bread and hot chips that make it taste nice
>>
>>8527558
I prefer the chip mesa myself
>>
Baked beans in a can are pretty good but they have a shit load of salt in them.
I think it's like twice the amount that's in a packet of Ramen.
>>
>>8527568
That's pretty amazing considering how salty quick ramen is. Makes you real thirsty I bet.

I used to have either that or mint jelly with lamb back in the olden days. Then again I'm 42 and born in the states but my grandmother was English and it was her thing

Meatball is practically the definition of "stodge".

I prefer a sausage and beans and I use the beans like a gravy.

>Fry bacon/other kind of sandwich meat
>Remove from pan
>Fry pieces of toasts
>Put cheese on them as they're frying
>Put the bread on a plate, put back the meat
>Pout hot baked beans over everything
>Consume with knife and fork

voilá! not depressing at all
By the way, the trick with baked beans is to add some spice. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just some black pepper and chili powder adds a lot to the taste.

>the impression I get of the chip butte is that people make it with left-over fries

Why would you make that assumption?
It's not a sandwich you would make then take to work with you - you eat it hot, as soon as the chips are cooked (and you need thick chips, french fries are too thin)

Where's the black pudding?

If I'm after easy to make stuff that requires no skill i go for scrambled eggs in the microwave, toast, and a bit of meat seasoning.

OK guys, I went with the beans and cheese burritos.

Also, I used some nice cheddar from the Mull of Kintyre, it's all I have in the fridge other than some crowdie.

How do my burritos look? Are you supposed to fold them over at one end or what?

What's REALLY good is plain bread between toast covered in white rice, potato slices, and butter.

cheese ruins it. guess what? You don't need cheese.

But Brits eat a shitload of sugar, salt and processed foods, they're not as fat as the Americans but they're pretty fat still.

Burgers are morons, this is not surprising.

Baked beans have a lot of salt though.

why the fuck do brits eat nothing but grain and more grain on their shitty sandwiches?
maybe I've been living under the impression that a proper sandwich should be composed of more than one food group or something?
>>
>>8533044
Urgh. We don't. This isn't a sandwich for starters.

Actually you know what, I can't be bothered trying to explain things to Americans anymore. Challenging the boring, outdated stereotypes of insular morons gets pretty fucking tiring.

They clearly haven't had much of Nordic cuisine then.
