Steak is literally caveman food. Salt, optional pepper, heat until desired donness based on cut itself, quality of cut, fat content and placement of fat within cut (is it lean or heavily marbled)

Each of these has an effect on the end result. Generally leaner cuts go better rare and fattier cuts better more done...

Or it might be the other way around. I dunno, I'm drunk.
