My mom won't try catfish and I'm 90% sure it's because it has 'cat' in its name, despite being a dolphin thus completely unrelated to any sort of cat.

People who understand seafood don't think sharks are worth eating. They are apex predators and thus also mercury rich! Flavor of mud is what catfish can mimic, and fish lovers really don't eat much fresh water fish either.

I've never seen dogish on the menu of any reputable restaurant, nor shark. Catfish is a regional thing, and since it often tastes like mud, no thank you. A lot of cheap restaurants now are using a catfish family creature called "basa fish" fished out the Mekong (the most polluted river in the world), that is shipped to other places. It's been replacing catfish on restaurant menu "fish fry" choices.

Dogfish/sharkfish/dogshark's pretty tender.

My mom refuses to use cumin when making chili. She buys the box with all the spices packaged separately and uses them all except cumin, which goes straight in the trash. Pretty sure it's because it has "cum" in the name.
