Sup /ck/, I want to get some relatives whiskey for Christmas but I don't know anything about whiskey. The reviews on most things just say things like ''the bottle looks nice 5 stars''. What's good? How old should it be? How much does a good whiskey cost?
Spirits general also, if you like.

Really show off and get a bottle of Blandton's
LIke 60 bucks but it's not for mixing so it should last a while.

That's pretty fancy, cheers!
Mostly used to drinking the £10 stuff (t. /alck/) so I'm kind of lost when it comes to notes and palates and whatever.

How high do you want to go on this mate? I mean, my preferred whisky is Lagavulin, here it's about 45 euro, back home in Ireland it's 90
If you want actual good whisky reviews hit up sites that know what they're talking about like Whisky Advocate or watch some ralfy reviews. How much a good whisky should cost depends entirely on the palate of the person you're buying for and what kind of whisky you're buying but in general most types of whisky are cheaper than scotch. There are almost no single malts less than $40 whereas you can get a good bourbon for $20-$25.

They didn't like laphroaig so I think minimal peat is the goal

In that case avoid Islay and Island stuff, get a nice Speyside or Highland malt. Avoid Macallan as the cost / quality ratio is fucked now. Not sure what availability is like where you are but Deanston 12 is my current go to. Aberlour is very good value and very, very good too. If you aren't looking for a cask strength sherry monster (A'Bundah) then the 16 is well worth a look.

Thanks for the advice, a Highland might be just what I'm after. Some friends have recommended Highland Park and Tobermory, do u know if they're any good? Seem kind of expensive

I had green label, now a discontinued series. For about 40 euro. That stuff was fantastic.

Highland Park is very good, but it is from Orkney so it is an island whisky. It has a bit of peat to it, but is very well balanced and not a peat monster like Laphroaig.
If you are after a Highland that Deanston I mentioned is very good. Dalmore is nice (pic in OP) but quite similar to Macallan in the sense the cost / quality ratio is a bit fucked. Old Pulteney is a very popular Highland malt for a reason so it is worth a look. Never tried Tobermory so couldn't comment there.
