In all honesty there should be a move towards sugar/Stevia hibryds since people who grew up with it don't care as it tastes just as good to them and people who transition to it eventually don't care either and we know we are going to like drinking too much soda and eating too many sweets forever

The two diseases are similar enough that it wasn't until somewhat modern times that the pathologies were differentiated. Diabetes mellitus in Latin means something like "to pass through a siphon" (as in frequent urination) + "sweet" (as in like honey, or sweet urine). It's a basic symptom-based old-timey description that covers both types of the disease, though even ancient doctors knew there were distinctly different types of patients who had it (otherwise normal children and obese adults). The reason most people first think of type 2 when you say diabetes is that 90% of people who have it have that type. And type 2 is exploding up at 8% of the world's population. Almost epidemic proportions.
