Am I the only one here who dilutes his coffee? I'll brew an espresso in a mug and pour in 200 ml of water.
It makes the taste less overpowering and I actually notice notes of berries and such.
A shot of espresso is about 30ml, isn't it? No wonder you're making a weird Americano - of course it's overpowering

This is how they make americanos in italy. Espresso + hot water.

How else would you make an americano?

I'm assuming that "americano" just means watery coffee.
But as I recall, I got a little pot of hot water to dilute according to my taste. In the US you receive a pre-ordained mix.
Other ways:
If you only put a small amount of coffee ground in a moka pot, then you would have a diluted espresso that could be called americano.
Or for that matter, if you fill the coffee section to the brim and brew espresso, then the second brew with the same ground will be pleasantly mild and americano-like.

i actually prefer americano to espresso these days
it's easier to flesh out the flavor profile and you can enjoy it longer.
