a wooden stirring spoon is not really a good substitute for that. is yours broken? maybe use the bottom of a sturdy cup or something

Yeah, mine broke. Had it since i first moved out. Went to use it just a bit ago and the handle snapped

Just use your fists.

I've mashed massive pots of potatoes with a metal fork. Hold the handle closest to the head, works like a charm.

Didnt even get a masher till last week, been making my taters just fine with that method
