Can somebody explain to me the purpose of cheddar on apple pie? Everytime i've tried it I just taste nothing.

It's unnecessary. It's just one of those end of meal pairings. Cheddar and apples goes together, right? Pears and gorgonzola? Of course.
So, it's all put together, and some people like it. The pie crust is buttery, as well, there's the dairy tie in to the crust.
I think if you don't like it together, that's fine, but it might be because it's low tier cheddar and simply not aged enough or the right texture (or even the right temperature). Or maybe you are a purist and don't want your pie messed with.

Its common in the midwest, and you can't really call their cheese "cheddar" since it is little more than solidified oil dyed yellow.
