I'm in vacation in NYC (the US's Mecca for Mexican Food) and I bought some tacos, I must say I'm quite impressed!

I had Al Pastor, Bistec, Enchilada, and Suadero. My favorite was the Enchilada. The Suadero was interesting, it sort of reminded me of tuna.

I would like to get some more Mexican food while I'm here, any places/dishes in particular I should try?
>>
>>8251264
Dominican food's where it's at m8
>>
>>8251271
I would love to try that too, where would you recommend?

Also as a side note, Hispanic girls are fucking hot. So much Latina eye candy here in NYC!

Yea NY sure is the epicenter of mexican food in america. Then again I took a french buddy to tacos in LA and he thought the pickled carrots go on your taco.

I'm in Sunset Park and there's tons of authentic Mexican food. I see lots of Mexicans and not many yuppie types,.

show us something authentic that they serve or some of the shops/scenery

La Casa del Mofongo in Washington Heights is GOAT tier. Malecon's breddy good too.
There's also this place called Ralph's out in Far Rockaway that's out of this world, buuuut
>Far Rockaway
>>
>>8251302
Just google street view "Sunset Park 5th Avenue"

Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights also works
>>
>>8251311
Thanks, I think I'll check out the place in Washington Heights
>>
>>8251360
Not him but also try El Panadero bakery on 179th and st. nicolas ave. Their breads are really tasty, namely the 'relleno', a soft egg bread stuffed with ham and cheese. And get some fritura (deep fried chunks of different kinds of meat) as well. Luisa Chimi on 178th and st. Nicolas is really good and great for sharing after a night of drinking.
>>
>>8251384
Thanks for the info!

What about Dominican girls? I've seen a lot of chicks so far who I think are Puerto Rican and Dominican and they are some of the best looking chicks I've ever seen. Where do they hang out on weekend nights?

I'm also in Sunset Park, and for DF style antojitos and Puebla style tacos and tortas we're doing really fucking well. Best are from the El Bronco truck on 5th Ave. Pic related is the birria from the truck, served in a blue and white old school NYC coffee cup.

I really enjoyed the tacos from El Bronco but they smelly, is that normal?

I could also taste that whenever I burped

>NYC is US's Mecca for Mexican food

What. There's got to be hundreds of Mexican places in border states ran by Mexicans serving real Mexican food that are better than pretentious food hipsters in New York.
>>
>>8251504
Do you think every last person in New York is a pretentious hipster? There are working class Latino neighborhoods in NYC with plenty of authentic food options from their respective countries.
>>
>>8251480
Smelly? The meat has a decent fat content and is well seasoned. Is that what you mean? Or could it be the generous amount of onion and cilantro they top them with? I wouldn't call them smelly, but for taquitos they pack a lot of flavor punch.
>>
>>8251504
There are real mexicans serving real mexican food in literally every state. Hell there are real mexicans serving you most of the other kinds of food you can find too even in places with relatively small mexican populations
>>
>>8251506
This. Most of the folks cooking in the Mexican places in Sunset Park are immigrants from Puebla.
>>
>>8251519
There are an estimated 500,000 Mexicans in NYC, (the majority of whom are immigrants). That's a lot of people when you think about it.
>>
>>8251513
I've had a million tacos from other places like that in NYC and I've never smelled that before. It almost smelled like bile.

Maybe it was one of my meat choices? Or perhaps they use a different kind of onion from what I'm used to.
>>
>>8251530
That's the aroma of authenticity
>>
>>8251538
I've had a million other authentic tacos and they didn't smell like that.

Does Suadero meat have a strong smell by any chance? Maybe that could have been it.

Did you get them at the truck or at the restaurant on 4th? I know at the restaurant they put papalo on the cemitas, and that herb has a powerful aroma and taste kind of like burnt rubber, and you taste it for hours after. But they don't use on any of the offerings at the truck to the best of my knowledge. Could it have been the pineapple in the al pastor that threw you? Or did you order the tripe or" cow intestine" without realizing what it was?
>>
>>8251568

>>
>>8251570

>Does Suadero meat have a strong smell by any chance?
It's a thin cut between the other muscle around the rib and the skin. And it does mush out when you cook it. I would think it's one of the funkier non-offal parts of the cow.
>>8251558
We're talking Mexican food, not Mexican American. And over the last decade and a half NYC has gone from laughably bad Mission style Mexican to a place where it's pretty easy to find great examples of (mostly Puebla style) real Mexican. And it's just as popular on the high end as well. Olvera (one of the top chefs in DF) has a place here. One of the hottest tables in town is the chef's table at Empelleon, where people sit in rapt attention while Alex Stupak makes tacos for them. Mexican has totally blown up in NYC.
>>
>>8251596
I wonder if immigrants from other parts of Mexico will start coming. I think there are a decent amount of people from Oaxaca already but there don't seem to be many Oaxacan style restaurants yet.

>>
>>8251607

>>
>>8251264
OP, just keep working your way through menus, hitting all the new items. It's the tacos de bistec that really I go home to, over and over, that squeeze of lime, cilantro and onion, is just so delicious. I don't even use salsa half of the time.
Soups are usually amazing as a starter. Try every kind no matter what else you're ordering. Also, get a homemade drink, any kind of aqua fresca, batido shake, or whatever they have...get it!

You'll find salsa quality varies in restaurants, might even be one of their most costly foods. Pickled carrots, onions, peppers can be asked for, upon request.

Orgasmic is chicken mole if you can find it and you think its homemade. Sopes/huaraches are kind of special homemade tortillas that are thicker like an arepa. You can sometimes get them with nopales, which is definitely something you won't get just anywhere and worth having once.

Dessert baked goods are so-so in mexico, sometimes just french influence puff pastries, or very sweet cakes or not so sweet donut like rolls. But there are exceptions. The dinner roll called a bolillo is sourdough and awesome. Their flan will be to die for, as will be any rice pudding. Someone serving breakfast will have the concha or other not-so-sweet roll, but also have yummy hot chocolate, atole (thick pudding-like corn starch drink), and coffee. The best breakfast choice is chilaquiles.
>>
>>8251599
Oaxacans who cook professionally are on the line at upscale places because when they got here word got out they tended to be hard working and were good in the kitchen. They got hired as dishwashers and many worked their way up. They're cooking French and Italian food for a living now, not Oaxacan.
>>
>>8251618
Yep, Oaxacans (but also people from DF and Puebla) can be found cooking in all sorts of restaurants in New York.

Still, a Oaxacan restaurant can definitely do well, like the one in Mott Haven.
>>
>>8251616
>chicken mole

God, I had that from a wrinkled old Grandma of a friend of mine. We sat in the living room drinking Modelo beer from 10 in the morning and she'd been working since 6 am. We ate at 7 pm and it was an otherworldly experience. God it was sublime. I've never quite had flavors come together so perfectly.

I'm in Houston, and I've never heard of NYC being the America Mecca for Mexican food. I mean I'm right at the border compared to NYC, and there's a Mexican restaurant on every corner here.

Why would NYC be more of a Mexifood Mecca than Houston?
>>
>>8252180
Because Tex Mex sucks, as does most Norteno cowboy cooking. Watered down examples of this cuisine convinced many Americans that Mexican food was shit. But you're not alone. SF style burritos did as much damage nationally.

Let the real Mexicans immigrate and heal the wounds. Let them go to places far from the border and dazzle with cooking that has little if anything to do with cumin, sour cream, shitty cheese or flour tortillas.

Ok, Houstonfag. I'm a Manhattanfag, and while i'd admit that Texas has an excellent availability of 'authentic Mexican cuisine', all you're showing us is fucking tacos. Tacos are delicious and good, but let's not pretend that they aren't babby's first entry level Mexican food that you can get pretty much anywhere where people speak Spanish in the US. It'd be like Euros arguing over who has the best American cuisine and they use pictures of burgers to prove it. Anyone thinking that Mexican style tacos are exotic anymore either lives in the deepest depths of the rural Midwest, or hasn't been paying attention in the last 10-15 years.

While other anons have mentioned the 500,000 Mexican immigrants here in NYC, let's face it. Unless you live here, no one is gonna find good Mexican food in the city, because tourists never want to go north of 96th street or outside any borough that doesn't start with an 'M'. It's a damn shame, but at the same time I kinda like not getting the tourism bullshit fucking up my neighborhood.

If you're in town sometime, try going up into The Bronx. South Bronx has some good food, and I had a really good mole in either Mott Haven or Morrisania, I can't remember.
>>
>>8251264
>NYC (the US's Mecca for Mexican Food)
>>
>>8256910
Actually, tons of tourists go to Brooklyn now.

And there is even authentic Mex in the East Village, but of course you'll find more Mexican food in neighborhoods where Mexicans actually live.
>>
>>8256910
>try going off the beaten path in NYC.

The problem is that's kind of tricky for someone who isn't familiar with it. 10 years ago I visited a friend who's native NYC and he took me to a lot of off the beaten path restaurants that were great. But as we were walking or on the subway, I'd say something like let's get off at this stop and walk so I can see the area and sometmes he'd say, we don't want to get off at this stop. We've got to go a couple more, because this areas bad. But there'd be no way for a non-native to know that. Based on what he was saying, you can have perfectly fine and comfortable areas adjacent to some downright dangerous ones without much of a transition.
>>
>>8257139
Your friend sounds like a pussy, there's pretty much nowhere left in NYC that's too dangerous to venture anymore.
>>
>>8257139
NYC's dangerous areas are like a tickle party pillow fight compared to Detroit. The only reason Chicago has more shootings than Detroit is that everyone is now gone. Nobody left to rob or steal from. The city has demolished so much of it's structures that it has turned into farm land. I saw white tailed deer strolling around near downtown just last fall.
>>
>>8257147
I dunno some white kids might see my outfit and snicker as I walk past. Sound pretty risky to me.
>>
>>8257139

I lived in East Harlem for a bit, which is considered the most dangerous area in Manhattan. I am also white and was usually dressed for white-collar work, which presumably would paint a big target on me. During the day, no one ever gave a fuck except beggars who would single me out, and at night (like 1-4 am) I'd occasionally see some gangsters on corners selling drugs, but as long as you didn't just walk up to them and start talkin you were fine.

The most important part of hanging out in a "bad neighborhood" at night is to:
1. don't look or dress like a tourist or carry touristy things, (backpack, camera, water bottle, etc.)
2. don't be such a tryhard to blend in that it backfires and you look like undercover NYPD instead
3. don't be meek, but don't be rude either

Also, if you're trying to find something in a neighborhood and you're close but not quite able to find it, stop staring at your fucking phone and just ask a shopkeeper, delivery guy on a bike, or a woman. Looking at your phone constantly like you're lost says you're not from around the area and oblivious.

A lot of it still does, it's just much harder to find in Manhattan and the trendier parts of Brooklyn. But there are plenty of old school Latinos, Italians, Jewish Orthodox and even Irish hanging on in less fashionable neighborhoods where their parents/grandparents settled. And if you want to eat like it's New York 20, 40 or even 80 years ago some of the old guard restaurants still are in business.

Yeah. A good amount of people are reminiscent over old NYC as being better or whatever, and I think your outlook on the city is a reflection on your outlook in life.

If some 50 something is complaining that his neighborhood isn't like it was in his 20's, then maybe it's because his dick doesn't work anymore and he's always tired, and it isn't because his shitty deli was replaced by a shitty coffee shop.

NYC was doing pretentious and trendy shit long before any of our great-grandfathers were even around. The elite and yuppies were eating expensive french food back in the 1800's after a broadway show, just as they are eating at Masa after going to a performance art exhibit today. And yet the subway still smells the same in 2016 as it did in 1916.

I love this fucking city, warts and all.
>>
>>8257690
I hate this city, I can't leave because it got in my blood. I'm stuck here, I don't feel comfortable anywhere else
>>
>>8257690
The city is always changing. I have buddies who are in their 60's and 70's, and they tell me stories of what the city was like when they were growing up, and it sure as fuck isn't what the city is now. They were able to see all kinds of famous live acts play small to medium sized venues for pocket change (and possibly get laid in the process) in neighborhoods that today are all about fine dining. There is no more music scene left in Manhattan. CBGB's closed years ago, ffs, and became a John Varvatos store. That's something I missed most of (caught the last gasp of it in the late 1990's/early 2000's). But it's gone now. The down side of that was junkies everywhere and a much higher change of being mugged on the street. But you could afford to live in Manhattan without being rich, and there was cheap entertainment at many local bars.

The NYC I live in today is cleaner, safer and a much better place to eat that what these guys grew up in. But it's no longer the nonstop party it used to be. I can see why the old dudes are nostalgic for that. But the ones who were smart enough and able to buy their places back in the day aren't complaining about the changes. They still love it here. It's the renters who got screwed. Hell the place I used to live in the EV for under a grand a month 15 years ago now rents for $4k. If you're young and not wealthy don't even bother trying to live in Manhattan. And the lack of young people who aren't wealthy has taken some energy out of the place. That's legit.
>>
>>8253697
I'm sure there is, but calling it the "mecca of mexican food" is stupid. Especially since in cali we probably have millions. I don't recommend coming here though.

There's plenty of non-wealthy young Manhattanites still around, my dude. I'm one of them, and nearly all my firends are, too.

That being said, I wasn't around for the big live music scene. I'm an amateur musician myself and yet I still realize how great of a music city NYC is compared to all the other places I've lived, even in 2016. At least the stand up comedy scene is still fucking excellent, the big guys pop in for a few bits and the young guys are keeping things fresh.

I can see where there is a disillusionment with Manhattan though. The city is becoming less centralized than it used to be, and there's a lot of cool things to do in BK and Queens. Most of the cool new-ish musicians I know do their tours in BK instead of the city. However, I did see FlyLo's debut for You're Dead! in Hell's Kitchen 2 years ago and it was sick.

>>8257690
I'm not saying all the changes are bad, it's great that there is less crime, more food options, and probably more nightlife.

But the city has gotten so fucking expensive, it seems like there will be nowhere left for poor people to live (who aren't in NYCHA or rent controlled apartments) not too far from now. I think NYC is best with a mix of different people, I wouldn't want it to be nothing but wealthy people like all of Manhattan from the Southern tip to W110/E96 has become.

Rents in the fucking South Bronx (which still has pretty much zero hipster/yuppy presence) are like $1300 dollars now for a 1 bedroom, just 3 years ago it was much cheaper.
>>
>>8258373
Nowhere in Manhattan is affordable except for maybe parts of uptown Manhattan but even that's changing. Rents in Washington Heights are probably double what they were in 2010 now.

If you're not wealthy, you must be either in a rent stabilized apartment, or living with 5 other people.

But yeah the city is becoming less centralized, East River Brooklyn and Queens are also happening places, but super expensive.
Actually I would argue that the "central" zone has exploded.

I would say Lower Manhattan is probably still the heart of everything though, as far as nightlife goes. Ludlow Street is probably the most packed area for nightlife in the whole city.

Hey hey, looks like someone knows their shit for once in a 4chan thread! Yeah I know Mott Haven rents are climbing, but it's not reactionary pricing from landlords observing hipsters moving in.

It's actually because several developers have bee purchasing plots en masse, and that leads speculators and real estate companies to increase the land value because they're anticipating large projects from the developers in the near future. That's mainly because of the lack in development in Northern Harlem recently, (from the community's resistance to gentrification) is pushing developers over the river.

>>8259463
I live in Harlem with my wife, not rent controlled. I would definitely say we are nowhere near wealthy. The cost of rent is a larger portion of our incomes than most cities, but at the same time, we don't pay expensive ass car insurance for people in their 20's, no car or payments,no parking fee, so we make it work that way. (and believe me, New Yorkers underestimate the cost of transportation anywhere except their city)

But yeah, it's fucking expensive, and a decision to move here when you are young is not something to consider lightly.

>>
>>8259484
It's not just Mott Haven dude, even Wakefield rents look similar. The cheapest I've found so far for a 1 bedroom was a place in University Heights for 1150. In some cases it's development, but in others it might be landlords squeezing people for as much as they can. I think immigrants will share an apartment with a million people so that helps them afford the high rents, but I think apartment sharing in general is part of why NYC rents are so expensive.

And yeah much of upper Manhattan is doable with two incomes, at first I was assuming you were gonna say something like "I only make 120,000 a year and I share a studio with 3 people in the Lower East Side". And you're right that not having to drive is a savings in itself, even as the subway fares rise over time.
But shit, I want to buy property in The Bronx if I still can in 5 years or so once I have an actual career hopefully. Property literally anywhere in NYC is a good investment in my opinion. I work in Springfield Gardens (not even remotely trendy and has no subway), I checked the price of houses around there and it seems to be more expensive than where I live on Long Island.
>>
>>8258373
>I can see where there is a disillusionment with Manhattan though. The city is becoming less centralized than it used to be, and there's a lot of cool things to do in BK and Queens.
My point is that the city used to be a music town. People would plan their night out around the listings of which bands were playing where in the Voice. Maybe grab a slice or a falafel on their way from one venue to the other. Now people don't go out to see live music nearly as often, and they're much more likely to plan their nights out around which restaurant they want to go to and maybe which place they're gonna hit for drinks before/after. It's rare to just be walking down the street and hear live music coming out of a place, where it used to be common in many neighborhoods. Today you really have to seek it out.

Most serious young musicians I know have left. The ones with a little standing in the industry went to LA. The ones without ended up in places like New Orleans, where rent is cheap and you can gig every night.

As I said the up side of this is that the food scene in NYC is better than it's ever been. But the music scene is weak compared to what it was as recently as 15 years ago. I'm not bemoaning it, but it is a striking change. Like white middle class kids moving to Bed-Stuy, fine dining on the LES and Michelin starred restaurants in he EV. I mean, fuck, I was a die hard EV rock and roll guy just over a decade ago, and now I'm thrilled to be living in South Brooklyn. Things change in this town really fast.

Thankfully we now have excellent Mexican food. That's still pretty new.
>>
>>8253675
Having a lot of Mexicans in your neighbourhood means cheap kitchen staff and garden labour. It doesn't mean the neighbourhood is filled with entrepreneurial expert chefs that can bring the taste of home to commercial success in NYC
>>
>>8261244
Those Mexicans too the chance leaving home in order to work for a better life for themselves and their families. They might not be all that skilled, but many are entrepreneurial as fuck. And in the neighborhoods where they live there are lots of people looking for a taste of home. Want to know which places are doing it right? The places that cater to them and have them lining up for.
>>
>>8261244
>mexican kitchen and garden labor

I built my house hiring subcontractors, and the Mexican crews, some probably illegal, worked their ass off and did a great job. The whites and blacks, on the other hand, not so much.

The fact that I have witnessed an Hispanic work ethic far greater than the black or white work ethic, in no way reduces black contributions to civil rights, but it does point out a discrepancy between Hispanics and Blacks with regard to their current and potential contribution to the US.

Nyc get a rope

I have no issue with hearing about how a city got loaded with a distinct mexican areas sense of food but to call a place like nyc a mecca in the us for mexican food is far beyond preposterous

Imagining such claims coming from a city in china, eastern europe or even india ok fine but to claim a mecca for mexican food is nyc a place that is devoid of hot deserts, rich tropical jungles, let alone any actual mexican territory before anglos showed is something to not be taken serious

Two nights ago I was standing at the El Bronco truck in Brooklyn talking with a dude from Puebla. His take on the tacos there was that they're "really close" to the tacos back home and "almost as good". I'll take that as a ringing endorsement given that Puebla is over 2000 miles away from me.

>>8263796
This happens when real estate values go up. When your $400k building is suddenly worth $1.5 mil you raise the rent accordingly. But there are still affordable places in Brooklyn without having to live with nightly gunshots in Bed-Stuy or pioneer in East New York. Bay Ridge is lovely and is still within reach of the middle class. Bensonhurst is a bit more remote, but completely affordable. Gravesend might be the middle of nowhere, but even a poor person can live well there. And what these place might lack in terms of nightlife (not Bay Ridge, that place has it's own weird nightlife going on) they make up for in food, because they're full of immigrants and their children. You want Chinese, Italian American, Middle Eastern, Greek, Mexican. Viet, Turkish, Georgian, Russian or Latin Caribbean? It's there. Want something else? It's just a couple miles away.

The fashionable parts of Brooklyn are as expensive as Manhattan. And some of the adjacent neighborhoods are shitty and quickly becoming overpriced. But the unfashionable parts of Brooklyn are great places for someone into food but not rich. I have a starving artist buddy who lives in fucking Gravesend and he's loving it. That's some deep hinterland shit. But he has access to a bunch of good, cheap restaurants, and living there is cheap enough that even on a starving artist budget he can still enjoy them. He's eating some of the best Viet food in NYC and partying with Georgians. Hard to argue with.
>>
>>8264367
Bay Ridge being affordable isn't so true anymore, 1BRs are going for 1700 plus. If you're single you'd have to make like 70k to afford that, and you'd be spending a big chunk of your money on rent. The property values in South Brooklyn are becoming ridiculous too, aren't places in Gravesend going for like a million dollars now?

Brownsville and East New York are not really affordable either, if you're single you would still have to make 50k+ (which most people in the hood do not make).
>>
>>8264367
While I would not want to piss away my money to live in Williamsburg, if you're young it's a fun place to go to party.

What are some cool bars in Lower Manhattan and Williamsburg (and neighboring areas)?

I go barhopping pretty often but I'm looking for places that are particularly cool. I feel that a lot of the places I end up in are kind of the same, but some places I like a lot.

I would like the place to be:

Crowded but not retardedly crowded to the point people have to wait outside for more than 5 minutes

No cover charge or small cover charge

Diverse

Good drinks/drink prices

Not douchey

Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights is awesome though, there must be like a billion Mexican and South American restaurants there and the street always smells so good from all the trucks.

That's part of it yeah. Tex-Mex uses lots of cumin, lots of meat (beef especially), lots of shredded cheese (mostly cheddar or pepper-jack), soft flour or fried corn tortillas, and beans. Easily 90+% of the "Mexican" food you'll find in the US is in fact Tex-Mex. Not to say it's bad, shit's mad tasty, it's just not actual Mexican cuisine.
>>
>>8272899
Not only is this not true, you can't relegate any one thing to all Texans. Texas is the size of 10 European countries combined, it is motherfucking massive and has totally different traditions and endlessly different culture. If anything, heavy use of cumin would be a thing from deep South Texas, where Mexicans are the majority and quality of life/income is very similar to Mexico. However in many parts of Texas you will find perfectly authentic and very high quality Mexican food that is on par with the best in the world.
>>

You know Boston exists right?
>>
I'm no fan of California but you're a fucking idiot if you think New York has better Mexican than LA.
>>
>>8274635

Chicago is just all around shit.
>>
>>8275465
Have you even been to New York? Mor specifically Sunset Park or Jackson Heights?
>>
>>8275465
The Mexican in NYC is a different style than that of LA (and way different than Texas). It's ma recent arrival pretty much direct from Puebla (and to a lesser degree D.F.). Burritos are much less common, but tortas are a given. Tacos are dressed up with generous amounts of chopped onion and cilantro, but cheese and crema are rare (though Oaxacan cheese shows up on tortas). Fish tacos, fajitas, huevos rancheros and queso dip are not part of the vocabulary. But birria, sopes, quipe, deep fried empanadas, tacos arabes and even slachicas are. Al pastor is king and many places have a gyro machine.

Whether you prefer the Mexican food in LA or NYC used to be a no brainer. LA was great and most of NYC was laughably embarrassing. This was true as recently as just over a decade ago. But now it is no longer the case. Now the Mexican in NYC is as good as LA, and which you prefer is a matter of which style you prefer.
>>
>>8275570
What's /ck/ coming to? A rational, intelligent, objective analysis? Now I've seen everything!
>>
I'm not saying it's a mecca, but Chicago has some really fucking good Mexican places, Especially down in Pilsen. And I'm not talking about just Tex-Mex. Rick Bayless has his little Mexican Resteraunt Empire that is pretty fucking tasty, even if it is a little "hoity-toity foodie" sometimes.
>>
>>8275570
There are a lot of Poblanos and Chilangos in LA too.

Though I think Baja and Guadalaraja are the most common origins for Cali Mexicans.
>>
>>8275570
funny how I can go out and find trucks to get anything you just listed and more in Houston...
>>
>>8275912
Sure you can. The first time I had a good torta was in Houston. It's the fact that you can get them in NYC that's relatively new and novel. Because that sure as shit wasn't the case a decade ago.
>>
>>8275790

Or more likely California, since it was owned by Mexico long before any white ass sat down in it.

What? The mexican food is horrendous in NYC, trust me, lived her my whole life. Where did you even find Al Pastor in NYC? I've had mexican food in NM CA and some other state I can't remember for the life of me that blew whatever I've tried in NYC out the water. There's a mexican food truck 2 blocks from me here in Queens that's great though, but it's not even really all that Mexican, guy gets creative in the truck, and you play russian roulette with your intestines eating from food trucks, so I rarely eat it.

Maybe 15yrs ago bensonhurst and bayridge were affordable.
>>8264694
You could always get an apartment in a nice old building in Redhook bro, just get home from work before dark and it's all good.
>>8272862
Other way round, Brooklyn is a pain to get around by mass transit or even drive.
>>
>>8280020
You're not looking hard enough, dude. There's tons of Authentic Mexican food in the Mexican neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens. There is also stuff in every other borough.

Also I doubt Red Hook is still affordable, it's in the circle of yuppy Brooklyn.
>>
>>8280486
True about Red Hook, it was more a joke considering how the area was 15yrs or so ago.
Actually the street car they're looking to build that will run through Brooklyn and Queens.
The BQX line they propose will run through some areas with nice restaurants, but who
knows when it will be completed.
https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20161102/red-hook/bqx-streetcar-brooklyn-queens-route-nyc
Give me some Mexican restaurant spots in Queens, I'm seriously interested, especially
if they serve up Al Pastor.
>>
>>8281166
Jackson Heights in Roosevelt Ave has a ton of Mexican spots, most of them will do Al Pastor but I'm not sure which ones have an actual gyro wheel for it. Use Yelp or follow the crowds of Mexicans to figure out the best spots.

Oshitniggerwhatareyoudoing.jpg

This is the United States mecca for Mexican food
>>
>>8281921
new york thinks they are the mecca for every food there.
>>
>>8251568
why is the meat so soft? that stuff is supposed to be grilled
>>
>>8281973
Compared to many other cities in the US it is a mecca - a place people from all over the world to see. There are a lot o Michelin stars here. A lot of famous chefs come here to open restaurants. Immigrants from all over the world come here, and some of them open restaurants that serve the food of their homeland. But it's also a competitive place - if your restaurant isn't all that great some guy is gonna open up on the same block and put you out of business. Hell, that can happen even if you are great. The only places where bad restaurants can hang on are in tourist areas and near the projects.

Basically any famous dish from some other part of the world can be found here if you know where to look. That includes a lot of top flight Mexican food these days. The city has been obsessed with Mexican food for the last bunch of years. You've got Stupak and Olvera on the high end and countless trucks on the low end. And a lot of it is very good.

basically means a huge fucking burrito with everything in it, lettuce, rice, beans, crema/sour cream, etc

we also have "California burritos" which is bigger down south. carne asada, shredded orange cheese, fries, sour cream, and gauc

san jose is known for their orange sauce which is hot sauce that is creamy and garlicky

cali burritos around here(texas) are just a big burrito with everything including rice, never seen a burrito here with fries I think thats mainly in cali. We also have a texas burrito which is usually just a burrito with a cheese or ranchero sauce poured over it, they are both usually shit tho from taquerias or tex mex joints, and there is always a better option
the only burritos i eat here are from trucks, theyre greasy but damn good, pic related

Yah in California a California burrito is a specific type always carne Asada and fries. A lot of Mexican places will serve a plate of fries with heaps of Asada, salsa, and cheese too. So fucking good mang. All of our burritos are giant tho that's just a burrito to us. Usually if it has guac and crèma it's called supreme and costs a whopping 5.95.

What are the most commonly sold fillings from those Poblano places in New York?

Lengua and carne asada?
>>
>>8291194
nyc here, what are poblano places
>>
>>8291194
Al pastor is king. Tinga chicken is common, along with carne enchalada, cabeza, chorizo and lengua. Some places have tripa. And because it's the US bistek is always an optiopn (though usually not the best).
>>
>>8291230
I mean the taquerias that one would generally find in NYC, as most are run by people from Puebla (or nearby Mexico City).

>>8291329
A lot of places don't have a gyro machine so I don't know if I could say it's king.

Also chicken is always an option too even though that's a rare taco filling in Mexico.
>>
>>8291381
>Also chicken is always an option too
At least in my hood it's frequently in the form of chicken tings, which is a DF riff on Indian tikka chicken, making it a little more interesting than just generic fucking grilled chicken breast.
>>
>>8291399
Yeah I meant chicken breast, I know Tinga is a common option from Poblano run places (and probably is common in Puebla).

Since I've started eating real Mexican food, my favorite taco fillings are mostly pork ones now, I think Enchilada is my favorite. I love authentic Mexican food so much but the one thing I don't like sometimes is when there's too much cilantro.
>>
>>8291381
which taquerias do you go to in nyc that are specifically from puebla?
>>
>>8291458
well I'm just assuming that most of them are owned by people from either Mexico City or Puebla, being that these are the most common origins for Mexicans in NYC.

I actually did chat with who I believe to be the owner of a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn, he's from Mexico City and the cooks are from Puebla.

There's a Oaxacan run place in The Bronx too.
>>
>>8291461
wow with all those specific locations I'm positive you aren't full of shit
