It looks exactly like ugly soviet foods except with more processed meat. cold war era = era of worldwide aspic horror

Food did look boring and brownish in the 70s. It was partly because the printing technique was cruder then. They used 3 colors, where today we have 4 colors.

Vegetarian Epicure Vol I and II.
This is the kind of shit that fucked up American cooking in the 20th Century. Up until this time recipes were family and regional, passed down through generations and based off actual ingredients. Suddenly industrially produced products were in supermarkets and the advertising industry had the power to sell them in magazines and on television. This meant inventing recipes out of nowhere to sell these products as modern. And people wanted to be modern. They lived in Levittown style houses with cars, TVs and Hi-Fi's. Modern food fit the aesthetic they were living, and if it tasted weird I guess people just assumed that was the taste of modernity. For people who suddenly went from being raised during depression and war years to times of plenty they were happy with enough fat, salt and sugar. Canned foods were the norm and frozen foods were the new innovation.

>What the fuck was going on in the 70s????
Lots of shit, Anon.
Boomers got into their late 20's - mid 30's and the acid hadn't worn off, a lot of them got jobs and were putting on pounds, many got into cocaine.
Mainstream jazz died, replaced by fusion and funk, rock got poppier and more mainstream, disco.
"Old guard" Hollywood was dying out, the "new guard" was on its way in: Scorsese, Woody Allen, etc.
The rural purge on TV happened where sitcoms with rural settings got canceled: Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, Mister Ed, Beverly Hillbillies, Gunsmoke
.
Family sitcoms, sitcoms with big city living, and detective shows were on the rise: The Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family, The Bob Newhart Show, etc.
Oh, and the low fat meme started around this time.
There were now "low fat" versions of pre-made shit that either just had less fat and more sugar, or were just complete shit (pic related).

I grew up in the 80s in Canada and as a child I greatly preferred Aunt Jemima to real maple syrup, which we had in abundance. My mom couldn't understand it, but to my kid's palette, it was sweeter and simpler. Maple syrup had more flavour, which interfered with getting maximum sugar per bite.
Fucked up when I think about it, but that's kids for you.

This. One side of my family was well to do and the other side was downright poor. The rich grandparents were the ones who ate aspic back in the day, and the poor side was likely to mock them for eating it. I'll agree it's a horror food, but it was definitely a class tell back in the day - something people served as a mark of status. The poor side of the family was making "salads" out of Jell-o instead.
In Sweden during the seventies we saw alot of more classic components being mixed with new and exciting fruits like banana or pineapple.
Here are a few fun examples with pictures (in Swedish though sorry):

>>8190323
This dude fucking gets it.
Americucks were butthurt at Other countries so they opted to shit this shits!
>>8190323
To be fair it's a huge country, and the average American is not really exposed to all that much in the way of other cultures. Large parts of the country are cultural vacuums. In such places you can present anything as being from a specific foreign culture and no one will be able to tell how accurate your claims about it are. Not to mention we have a tradition of making fake versions of other cultures' food for novelty's sake. This goes back to Americanized Chinese, the fake Polynesian at Trader Vic's, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. Corned beef and cabbage being adopted as an Irish American meal had as much to do with their Jewish immigrant neighbors as the Irish themselves. And the sub sandwich as we know it today was what happened when the late 19th Century craze for French bread met the Italian American pork store.
We have a long history of weird cultural mash ups and just plain making shit up.
>>8190366
It's also true that in large parts of the US, the representation of something as "foreign" is certain to be met with ridicule and disdain, evidence of which can be seen on this board everywhere.
>>8186968
This'un?
>>8190394
This is true. Pizza Hut is a perfect example. For years they played down the Italian aspect of pizza, because Italians were not all that favorably looked at in the places where they were opening restaurants.
Some parts of the country are not just lacking a cosmopolitan sensibility, but they wear it like a badge of honor. I never understood that, but it's probably because I didn't grow up in one of those places. But I have traveled to some of them, and generally the stronger the anti-cosmopolitan sentiment the worse the food there is. Nebraska and West Virginia are the two best examples I can think of.

I was going to say, "Who the fuck puts apples on hamburgers?" then I looked at the bottom of the pic and read the words: Fruit Producers' Council.
That's what was wrong with all of these recipes - they weren't developed for taste or aesthetics - they were made up just to move a product, in this case apples. But who the fuck is really going to put apple slices complimented with stuffed green olives on top of their open faced party hamburgers? Only someone who has absolutely no idea what they're doing in the kitchen.
A lot of these recipes depended on people being stupid and believing everything they read.

>pizza isn't Italian
>>8192835
That's retarded - pizza as we know it was brought to this country by Italian immigrants during the first years of the 20th Century. Chains like Pizza Hut popularized a very American take on the dish half a century later - overloading it with cheese and putting as many toppings (particularly processed, salty, fatty meat) as possible on it to please redneck tastes, while distancing it from its Italian origin. But the fundamental idea of flatbread usually topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella is Southern Italian in origin.

>Only someone who has absolutely no idea what they're doing in the kitchen
remember that the 60s/70s were really big as far as 2nd wave feminism, bra burning, and generally lashing out at "ladylike" things
my mom made shit like this when i was a kid, because when she was a kid, my grandma was a radical feminist who refused to cook anything for the family because she was striking out at "a woman's place in the kitchen" attitudes. they had a lot of Hamburger Helper type shit because that's what they knew how to cook on their own

i'm guessing that this is a spin on "company chicken," which uses cream of chicken soup mixed with parmesan cheese as a sauce
