Disliking a cheap mass produced product doesn't make you a snob. It just means you have other options you find much better available to you. Not everybody does. And of course some folks just enjoy cheap mass produced stuff for its own sake. But not liking American cheese does not make one a snob. It melts pretty well, but beyond that it's pretty much just a bland slightly rubbery riff on cheddar.

I never blame anyone for liking or disliking any particular kind of cheese, but what you're doing is a form of snobbery. It's the "salt-of-the-earth types are better than you city folk" snobbery. People don't buy expensive cheeses because they're expensive. It's not a watch: no one will ever be impressed by the expensive cheese collection you have. There might be a brand or two out there with gold flakes in it, but that's basically for retarded rap stars with more money than sense. I wish I liked more than a couple of brands of American, because it's everywhere. I just don't.

We have a Mexican restaurant in my hometown. Their steak house special is a skirt steak with two slices of half-melted American cheese slapped onto it, with really good beans and some salad.

It's one of their more popular items.

I personally find that it makes mot sandwiches taste like ass (my go-to is just Swiss or for specific sandwiches spic 'cremoso' cheese), and on burgers I like provolone.

Also, I can't see a brie and pear sandwich working well with American cheese. I also can't see American cheese work in anything that say Roquefort or Gorgonzola would work in (walnuts and American cheese for filling savory pastries?) I know yo said burgers and sandwiches, but this is just an example of why, you know, we have other cheeses.

It tastes amazing and is superior for certain applications. The flavor is practically identical to its unprocessed counterparts, so texture is really what determines the best usage. It's essentially concentrated cheese sauce and should be utilized as such.
