So I've bee wanting to get into sandwiches lately, I'm kind of a sandwich noob....in my youth I mainly just ate like cheese sandwiches (cheese and mayo) or just turkey and mayo with lettuce, but I realize these are very basic and I want to get into making good sandwiches.
What do you think makes a good sandwich? What are the key components? Favorite filling combinations? Any favorite sandwiches? Eventually I'd like to get into more advanced toasted sandwiches but I'm gonna start with simply cold sandwiches

That is, actually, the only necessary qualification for being an American. The rest of it is just a formality.
>cheese and mayo
Yeezus Christ are you being serious?

Get a type of bread that compliments what you want to have inside. If you're going to have salami or something else on the chewy side, get sourdough that will give a nice bite. Softer breads will be less intrusive if you want to stack your sandwich high.
Get some interesting spread, like brown mustard instead of yellow. Make or buy a creamy aioli that you can add different flavors to.
Make something that has a nice variety of textures. Fresh onions, bell pepper, cruncy bacon, heck even potato chips give a nice crunch. Pickles, tomatoes, Jalapenos, are squishy and will add some moisture to the sandwich, just don't over do it.
Let your cheese be noticed. Get rid of the american singles. Provalone or swiss will give just enough bitter pungency to contrast with something sweeter like tomato. Something smokey like smoked cheddar or gouda will go well with red meat, or creamy sauce. Muenster or Harvarti are good with fatty meats like bacon or ham.
Even different meats have different textures. Turkey is super tender, whereas roast beef or pastrami will give some resistance.
Don't be afraid to add something sweet like cream cheese, cranberry sauce, sweet pickle, honey mustard, apple slices, whatever you can imagine.
