The water will pull the seasoning of so load up tons and I mean a ton of seasoning into it. Carrots onions potatoes. Let it cook low for 8 to 9 hours and enjoy. My first slow cook I use a ton of those cheap pit roast packets from the market.
Also rum. I enjoy rum

Thouroughly season it all over with kosher salt.
Sear on all sides in a screaming hot pan.
Delglaze the pan with a quater cup of brandy and reduce by half.
Place trimmed carrots, onions and potatoes in the slow cooker. Then the meat and reduced brandy. Add enough beef stock to completely cover. Season with thyme, black pepper and several cloves of garlic. Cook on high for 4 hours, on low for 5.
Remove the solids to a serving dish. Boil the liquids until they reach your preferred thickness for gravy.

Last time I made "pot roast" it was pork shoulder which I seared on all sides then slow-cooked in homemade curry gravy.
All you need do is salt the meat, sear the meat, and slow cook in a flavourful stock or sauce. Beef gravy. Mushroom gravy. Onion stock. Strong beef stock. Paprikás. Etc etc etc.
Add the veg nearer the end so that they don't disintegrate.

>Deglaze with brandy
If they are having trouble figuring out how to make a simple pot roast with Google at their disposal, I doubt they could do something like brandy deglazing without flipping their shit when flames start flying.

Sear it in bacon fat before putting in slow cooker. Thank me later.

Chef John just did a video for a pork roast wrapped in parchment paper, I tried it and it came out great.
