/ck/, I come to you with a sad and desperate request. My dad is on the cusp of diabetes and is addicted to sweet junk food. If he develops full blown beetus he has to go into assisted living and I want to help him get well before that happens.

I want to help him get his blood sugar back to normal while still satisfying his sweet tooth, because otherwise he just binges on sweets as soon as I leave his house for the night. Right now he buys all of his own groceries and always gets snack cakes and ice cream and other similar sugary shit. I've tried throwing them out and he just buys more.

I want to bake for him instead of him buying the things that will kill him.

Do you have any recipes for desserts that are lower in sugar and a little healthier than the over processed shit he loves? Please help me /ck/, I love my dad and don't want him to go to the home.

Shit pasta bro

not a pasta. I'm serious.
>>
he's gonna keep doing that shit til he dies.
I've worked with diabetics who have lost fucking limbs but insist they can't/won't give up their cola and their fucking little debbie

I'm sorry your dad is this same shit-tier who believes his health is the exception to the rule about diabetes, but he's that faggot

I know it deep down in my heart. I'm fighting for his life while he shoves cake in his face. I'm begging him to go out and walk with me and he prefers to sleep in his easy chair and watch tv.

This is just a last ditch effort on my part to try to save him. But you're right, he doesn't seem to even want to be saved.

best thing for me was getting new addictions between black coffee and soda water. adding tart cherry or cranberry juice helps, sometimes.

i'm going through the same thing with my dad. we're trying to find a low carb main dish that he can accept as a replacement for most heavy things. when that's tired, it'll be easier to make the next dietary compromise.

but all of this requires he accept things have to change. if you want to replace the same sweet tastes, it's nearly impossible.

the only "desert" i can think of:

add a tbsp of sugar to a cup or two of heavy whipping cream, and beat until you get stiff peaks. and dip strawberries and fruit in it.

if you don't use / use enough sugar, it will just taste like butter. (for myself, i used to not add sugar and freeze the whip)

you can get an acceptable taste @ ~1g/sugar per spoonful

also if you don't consider copious fruit too sugary, you can mix 1:1 eggs and overripe bananas to make decent banana bread pancakes

if it's always available, he might take it as a filler displacing some real cake

Go in the other direction.

Start baking delicious sugary treats, and keep it up until he dies.

Then, you have inheritance money, and you don't have to worry about that waste of calories.

I got diagnosed prediabetic 3 months ago @ 6'0 334lbs. My blood sugar was 118 fasting.

In the past three months ive dropped 30lbs and my blood sugar is between 75 and 90 fasting.

Reducing carbs is key, especially if your pops has some form of neuropathy. Buy him Dr Bernsteins diabetic solution, its old but it goes into depth on what he needs to do. Just a fantastic read

Diet rite is a good replacement soda, has no calories sugar or caffeine but a good bite in terms of taste.

Also try to help him keep his blood pressure down if its high, that can make diabetic symptoms worse

It sounds like your dad's problem is more psychological than anything. Has anything seriously bad happened in his life? Sugar abuse is usually an attempt to boost serotonin levels in the brain, and the only remedy for that I know of that isn't sugar or exercise is sceletium tortuosum (or hey, St. John's Wort or Rhodiola, but both work a little differently; SJW is a MAOI-B, Rhodiola boosts both dopamine and serotonin) combined with 2000 mg of L-tryptophan before bed. Look up this stuff called Zembrin, it is an over-the-counter herbal SSRI. Maybe it could help him in conjunction with tryptophan. A lot of serotonin is related to gut probiotics so feed the guy lots of unsweetened yogurt; it may help to make it into a middle-eastern spread called labne. Also check out http://www.balancingbrainchemistry.co.uk, the site was written by a bipolar guy who self-medicated with amino acids to get it under control. He has figured out a lot. Stevia in everything. Stevia soda. There are Israeli hard candies that are sugar-free for diabetics which are actually pretty good. In the meanwhile give the guy cinnamon and eucalyptus to stave off the damage for now; cinnamon moderates blood sugar, eucalyptus apparently lowers it. (I have no experience with it; just heard of both) You can make them both into tea, or of course add the cinnamon to everything. Make him home-cooked meals; I find that if I ate a greasy, meaty, fatty dinner of deliciousness, I don't need dessert. It may give him high blood pressure but then, this is more dangerous in the short term. Try some homemade meringues made with stevia instead of sugar, and use the whipped cream suggestion with vanilla liquid stevia instead. Usually the more fat and/or eggs a dessert has the more you can lower the sugar (or swap it with stevia) and get away with it taste wise. I've found that making sun tea out of herbs such as mint and lilac makes a concoction that doesn't need sugar and tastes much better than you'd expect. Good luck OP.

A couple of Visine drops in his drink should do the trick
>>
>>8014814

I'm going to make this for him tonight. I also cut up a watermelon for him hoping he'd eat that instead of junk shit. Thanks for the input, I use stevia in a lot of things I make for him and he seems to enjoy it well enough. Copious fruits may still be too sugary but it's loads better than cake and ice cream.

>>8014849
I've been looking at keto recipes to make for him. I didn't even consider the carbs that are in his "non-sweet" foods, thanks for waking me up to that. I have to look at the whole thing, not just one facet of his diabetes.

>>8014900
I think he believes he's too far gone already and kind of feels like "what's the point". It's definitely psychological but he also has issues with chronic pain since he had a serious car accident. I'm not really good at feelings but I'm trying to be a good son and be there for him. I'll try the thing with the cinnamon, I've been making him tea with stevia to replace the sugary fizzy shit he usually drinks. So far so good, he has stopped buying soda.

We just went for a walk. It wasn't a very long walk and he got winded and we had to return home, but I managed to get him out of his chair.

I think part of him still wants to get well.
>>
>>8014753
No but I'm going through the same shit.
Hell I Amy already have diabetes and I don't even care
>>
>>8015006
Get his happy ass to a pain specialist, fast. Regular doctors do not know what to do for chronic pain and there are people who specialize in that sort of thing.
>>
>>8015043

he has a morphine pump installed inside his body that I take him to a pain specialist to refill every two months or so. But even basic exercises pain him so much he needs to stop after <10 minutes. I don't think I can change too much about his pain situation but I'm hoping an improved diet and some weight loss will help him hurt less.

It sucks seeing him this way. He used to be fit but ever since the accident it's like he just gave up. But I refuse to give up on him. The rest of our family couldn't give less of a fuck and just wants him sent away to a home, so it's a struggle but we're in it together.
>>
>>8014753
Fruit, fruit, fruit. Bananas are going to be your friend at the outset, they'll do great as a sugar substitute.

Try freezing the fruit, it gives it a different texture that tastes a lot like ice cream.
>>
>>8014839
diabetes is a slow death. losing limbs costs money. most likely assisted living will drain any inheritance away to nothing..and to get assistance he will have to own no assets so anon is fucked going that route..

>>8014753
take his sweets away. clean out the house of shitty foods. start getting him on a eating regiment that regulates carbs and sugars. Add more vegetables into him meals along with white meat products and fish. cut out red meats completely. learn to make good filling salads. let him have a snack every once and a while but not so sweet that it will spike his levels..pre diabetes is easy to maintain and regulate. you just need to be vigilant and monitor his eating habits..otherwise he dies a slow and painful death..you should let him know the realities of being diabetic..lets see him use the tv remote with no fingers
