I want to get a nice bottle of whisky for my friend, but I don't know shit about whisky. Anybody have some nice recommendations for a ±80 euro bottle?
>whisky fan
Don't try to impress him, just get something slightly offbeat. Since you're a europoor, maybe something American like Old Potrero
>not whisky fan
Any old highland or speyside
For that much I'd say:
Lagavulin 16
Oban 12
Caol Ila 12
Aberlour A'Bunadh

Why dont you just buy 2 quality whiskey bottles? I mean you can buy Glenlivet 18 or any other expensive bottle, but what if your friend dislike it? Would be much safer to take 2 totally diferent, like Four Roses single barrel and laphroaig quarter cask? Also, more booze, the better

>Glenlivet 18
Don't do that to a whiskey lover.
I'd go with that one, it's refreshingly different but not too strong in either direction.
For those interested - I ended up getting this.

Because I figured he can (and does) buy cheaper bottles for himself, but something fancy he wouldn't normally get would be nice for a gift.

Good recommendations overall but Caol Ila seems to have changed to me.
It's almost got a kind of burnt rubber after taste which I don't remember it having until recently.
Hi. Im buying my first quality whisky for myself. I've been researching past few days and so far my favourites are Auchentoshan 12 or Three Wood and Aberlour 12 or A'bunadh. I just want to hear a few more opinions. Also, how much do you pay for a whisky and where is the point of diminishing returns?
Thanks

A'bunadh is a fucking great whiskey, bub.
I don't go over 65-70 dollars for a bottle of whiskey. There's just so many good scotches, bourbons and ryes under that price point.
I like Finlaggen but i don't know anything about whiskey. Is this considered to be good? I also love Aberlour

Thanks! How often do you drink it? I cant imagine buying a new bottle of this price every month!

I've only bought two bottles of it in 5 years.
It's awesome but I have more fun buying cheaper whiskies and having a variety on hand.
I forgot to mention that a good beginner scotch is Highland Park 12, it's got a little bit of everything and it should be around $40. It's a great place to start for single malts.
i have the same question, gift with similar budget but for bourbon

around $30
Elijah Craig 12, one of my favorites
Four Roses small batch is a good one
$50-60
Blanton's is very highly rated
Bookers is one of the best things I've ever tasted
Buffalo trace is a good place to start at a lower price

This, all of this
Years ago my dad bought a bottle of HP12 to celebrate my highschool graduation. It was my first time drinking.
We finished it that night. After the next day, I was still so surprised at how smooth yet smokey it was. I still keep a bottle of it to this day. It's just a good, affordable, beginner scotch whisky and I offer it regularly to guests looking to get into scotch.

~$45. Higher proof with a strong flavor to accompany it. Extremely smooth. Lots of caramel and oak. Comes in a cool bottle resembling a pot still too.
