As an elementary school aged kid, did anyone else ever watch Good Eats in the middle of the night to stave off those inarticulable feelings of death anxiety that made you stay up late in the first place? Did Alton Brown's clever mix of recipe instructions, scientific explanations, and comedy give comfort to any insomniac 9 year olds gripped by a terror they would not come to truly understand for years to come?

Not death anxiety, but I always loved watching him as a kid. I remember in watching the original Romancing the Bird thanksgiving special with my dad in 1999.
There was this one worker in my cafeteria that everyone liked, he would say "BAM" when he gave you food (Emeril was the only known food network chef at the time basically). I got excited and yelled out "DO YOU LIKE ALTON BROWN ALSO? HE'S SO COOL!".
He just looked at me like I was retarded, gave me some mac and cheese without saying BAM, and looked away.

there are a few bad ones: the sandwich one with his "nephew", the soybean episode, the cake one to name a few. the saddest part is that even if the episode was good his recipes are almost always shit, especially in earlier seasons. there's nothing more heartbreaking than trying alton brown's flavorless baked mac and cheese or meatloaf recipes.
