Think we went a bit heavy on toppings but it was still good. Very good.

Chinatown tonight probably for Joe's shanghai soup dumplings or maybe something else in that area.

Tomorrow brunch at Russ and Daughters cafe. Love that lox and herring.

>>
>>7625411
There was better nearby? Let me know, had all sorts of mixed reviews on the last thread so I just went with my gut
>>
>>7625419
I thought you were gonna go to johns? Even pizza suprema would have been better
>>
>>7625424
To be fair Britanon really is unlikely to be attuned to the nuances of what people argue about when it comes to pizza in NYC. And what he ended up with was a few notches better than a typical neighborhood slice joint, so he did OK. The area around MSG is not exactly culinary Mecca.

His Chinatown and LES plans will more than make up for it.
>>
>>7625424
I'm going to pizza suprema tomorrow before Pearl Jam at Msg so I didn't go today, probably should have mentioned that before
>>
>>7625464
Get a sausage slice at suprema
>>
>>7625424
Plus people were saying John's was amazing, John's was crap and John's was alright, same goes for suprema which I'm going to tomorrow anyways. I'll probably be back next year to go for more places any who, assuming the borders don't permanently close by then
>>
>voluntarily going to NY
>>
>>7625478
John's is better than Suprema

Suprema is better than a randomly chosen spot

The best slices at suprema are the plain ones. Get at least one plain slice.
>>
>>7625501
Supremas auce is too sweet. Sausage slice offsets the sweetness and is their best slice imo. But a regular slice is always the first thing you gotta try at a new pizza spot

OP Here, pretty much this. Just move fast and don't stand in people's way or gawk around at the buildings in busy areas. Pic related from my times Square visit earlier today

Getting skeptical about Joe's shanghai after reading some reviews about dogshit service and saying Shanghai Asian Manor is a more pleasant experience. Thoughts? Tempted to go there instead
>>
>>7625642
I've mostly been treated quite well at Joe's Shanghai but I usually go with a big group, we run up a decent tab, and they know us. It's very crowded and hectic and I can imagine how some might feel the service is brusque if the staff is giving attention to big groups.

Been there once or twice with just one other person and you get seated at a random large table with other random people. Some people find that really offensive since it's not common in the US. Like, they expect two people to be given an entire large table that could seat ten, and the rest of the seats are reserved so as not to hurt their delicate feewings? I dunno.

If you're just one or two people, you could consider Joe's Ginger next door. Shorter line, smaller tables, and same dumplings.
>>
>>7625652
Ah thanks, will consider it, I can imagine on a Saturday night it's gonna be jam packed. If there's a huge wait I'll go to the other place.

Also there's 5 of us this time tonight but for the other places I went to it was only 2
>>
>>7625642
It's so so. I've had real Shanghai soup dumplings before and their's aren't anything special. You're better off finding a Shanaghai place in Chinatown. Order tangchu pai gu. You'll thank me later.
>>
>>7625642
Also if you're still in that area Hidechan is good for ramen though almost any decent restuarant is gonna be packed considering it's a Saturday evening.
>>
>>7625672
>>7625667

Thanks anons, will consider both options. I'll throw all these places on the table with the others I'm with tonight and just go by majority vote. Normally if it were just me alone I wouldn't care about bad service but I'm with a party tonight... I'm off out now so I'll probably update in a few hours of where I ended up be it Joe's or wherever. Wow. That was an experience. Service wasn't bad at all, just straight to the point and they don't fuck about.

Dumplings were delicious ad expected, I found the crab and pork ones were a lot better than the plain pork as the soup was richer. Wasn't too doughy either.

We had some extras...

We also had a braised pork shoulder which was really tender but a tad dry on the leaner bits in the Centre but plenty of sauce to make up for it.

It tasted like a classic Chinese sweet sticky hoisin but with some extra flavours I couldn't quite identify, tasty nonetheless.

Shrimp noodles too, which came out puffed and deep fried which was unexpected but worked well.

Lastly a crispy whole fish (and the skin was very crispy) in another sweet sauce which was closer to a sweet and sour sauce but with a hit of chopped red chillies, lime and some other spices.

It was fucking amazing and one of the best fishes I've eaten, just a shame there wasn't much flesh.

They sat us with some randoms who were nice enough. Free Chinese tea too so no complaints.

Dinner ended with some complementary orange segments. All in all, 100% worth the hour and ten minute wait. Not an issue with good company. Thanks for the recommendation anons.

A little, won't lie. But we watched a couple of people empty the soup onto a spoon and eat the dumpling separately so I did that for the rest.

>eating Xiao Long Bao at a place that provides you with tongs

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself OP but you've done some pleb-tier stuff right there.
>>
>>7626527
How is Joe's shanghai outside chinatown?
>>
>>7626493
Ideally you pop the entire thing into your mouth, but if it's hot then releasing the soup into the spoon is fine.

>>7626527
Even Flushing places provide tongs. Sometimes there's no vegetable liner though.
>>
>>7626527
It isn't outside chinatown. It's right in the middle of fucking chinatown. They probably gave us tongs because they could see I wasn't local or Chinese and assumed we were unable to use chopsticks, or they just provided them because they served those dumplings like that to every other table.
>>
>>7626551
Ah fair, this soup was scalding hot though
>>
I live in Chinatown and yet been there. There's a place on East Broadway where I get breakfast, usually duck wonton noodle soup and a bowl of congee. If you want to try some "street" food you should go to rice noodle carts. There's a really good one on Essex and East Broadway but not sure if they're opened on Sunday, nice lady been going there since I was 5.

Haha, thanks

20 bucks herring platter which included 2 rollmops, 3 other types of pickled and cured herring and a little bucket of beetroot. It came with some pumpernickel bread and 3 dips - cream sauce, honey mustard and 'curry' (britbros, the curry one was fucking coronation chicken sauce, lolol)

The pink herring was sweeter and must have been cured with peppercorns, cinnamon, star anise etc as it had spiced notes. It was like a firmer sashimi in texture.

The Grey fish was' cooked' a little more and flaked but was stronger with vinegar, less sweet and was like a classic pickled herring that I know and love.

The rollmops had perfectly sweet, sour and crunchy onions inside that were like an improved sauerkraut, and very very juicy, unfortunately a tad too vinegary for me but we were eating a lot of pickled food so I was a little overwhelmed. She puts vinegar on everything at home so she had mine.

Katz time. OK well they didn't skimp on portions here. Had a pastrami and corned beef combo Reubens style. The pastrami was better than the corned beef imo but I just enjoy the smoky black crust and the layers of fat on it. Don't get me wrong, the corned beef was great and flaked beautifully. Very very tender cuts and my vocabulary isn't quite wide enough to provide a good description. It was wonderful.

The brown mayo on the tables was nice and spicy, worked well with it all.

Most major metropolitan areas are tolerant when it comes to the many different people who live there. I have neighbors who were born in Poland, Puerto Rico, China, Finland, Greece and the West Indies. I have neighbors who still speak Yiddish. I have neighbors who are (gasp) homosexuals. Hell I'm good friends with the lesbian couple in the building next to mine. They have the cutest little girl. I work with devout Muslims.

If that's the kind of shit that raises an eyebrow for you best stay in Podunk. Because we sure as fuck don't need ya here. But don't kid yourself about whether or not we're doing fine. We're doing fucking fine, because those who can't hack it here GTFO and go live where you do.

I'm from the South originally, but have lived in Boston for years and visited NYC several times.

People in the North aren't "bigger assholes" than in the South at all. It's just the pace of life here makes people speak and interact more efficiently. Southerners aren't used to that, and they enjoy using lots of verbal niceties for trivial things, so they may equate the lack of small gestures and small talk as rudeness.

And I'm practically addicted to a fast pace of life at this point. It'd be hard to get used to living in a rural area now, unless I were like 40-45 years old.

>>7626113
>I just like how no one gives a shit here while you get judged and stared at for wearing or doing anything out of the norm elsewhere.

And I think this is directly related to the fast pace of life and greater demands of living in a city--people have to stop caring about things that really don't matter, because they have less time and have to focus more on their jobs, where they're going, who they're meeting, etc.

The pace of live is kind of "healthy" in this way, as it forces you to focus less on bullshit.

>it'd be hard to get used to living in a rural area now, unless I were like 40-45 years old.
I'm 47 and the idea that I'd have to drive everywhere and couldn't walk (or bike) to everything I need sound like the fast track to fatassitude. I see many older folks around who are still fit, and I'm convinced it's because a chunk of their day is spent walking around. Kind of a use it or lose it thing. If you drive everywhere and sit on chairs, couches and toilets all the time you quickly lose your ability to squat below parallel, which is part of the way your knees were meant to operate. So they give out eventually.

I stayed in the city, my bro moved out to the exurbs for better "quality of life". He has a huge house and a pool for what I pay for a four room apartment. Over the last decade he and his wife both became morbidly obese. They have back problems now. How is that a better quality of life? They have a handicapped hangtag on the mirror of their cars and I'm older than they are and still walking around Brooklyn wearing fucking Converse, and not some orthopedic shoes because my body can no longer handle the simple exercise of walking a few miles to do basic shit like grocery shopping or socializing.

Better to live in the city in middle age by a longshot.

OP Here, as much as I'd love to I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon and I have some airport shit to sort out. Maybe next time eh?

Went with my sister to pizza suprema, not a huge line but enough to warrant about a 15 min wait, these guys were working their asses off.

There were about 12 varieties of pizza pre-made, and when orders came in they just slammed your order in the oven and shoved you along in true NY fashion.
>>

Missed this post, funnily enough nobody did but I kept to myself unless ordering food, so I guess it wasn't heard much.

So these are the slices we ended up with. I caused a fumble in the kitchen as I ordered a mozzarella basil slice and they sold the last one but still took my order, so they gave me a mozzarella basil with buffalo chicken. Also had a sausage pizza as anon suggested.

Im going to directly compare this to Bella Vitas restaurant as it's the only other pizza experience I've had in NY

Funny you mentioned that because I was about to mention how those pizza rolls seemed a bit overcooked on the base. Odd for one of NYs top joints.

The bases were very crisp and thinner than Bella Vitas, and much more pleasant to bite into. The fact that I had less toppings here probably helped with that, but the dough was seasoned much better and had a more pronounced yeasty flavour.

The chicken was surprisingly tender and not overcooked which us pretty common but they nailed it here. Just the right amount of cheese too.

The sausage one went well with the sweet tomato sauce, but the combination of mozzarella and hefty covering of sausage made the top a little greasy. The sausage was tasty though

Bella Vitas pizza also cooled down super fast and fell apart unless you manhandled it, pizza suprema held its own as the bases were crisper and firmer

Also anon I'm pretty sure that deep dish in the image was an upside down pizza on their menu, with the cheese on the bottom. And tomato sauce on the top. The crusts are raised to hold it together I guess. A lot of people asked for it

If you want some legit, authentic Indian food in Britain, go to Belgrave gate / Melton road in Leicester. The restaurants there are vegetarian but I eat there all the time over the norm. It's more flavourful and the varieties are far greater. You'll be surprised how many 'curries' are actually dry with no sauce and how much flavour they can pack in. Also, eat with your right hand and ditch the fork.

I kinda wish I did try some in NY, I've heard brick Lane curry house is alright but it looks like any other I've seen.

Pic related, you can get something like this for 5 quid on Belgrave.

Bagel was pretty well over, same with my fiancees as we had the same thing, the first bite I took actually tore the roof of my mouth. Chewy bagel and the cream cheese was like play - doh. Super salty salmon too =/

The shakes are great though. Super thick and flavourful. Worth the 10 bucks.

Part of the asshole vibe is an old schooler thing. There was a time when New Yorkers were assholes. Working class guys born before WWII were supposed to be tough. It was a tough town where a street brawling firemen could rise to run Tammany Hall, screw the taxpayers out of millions and die in jail after escaping to Spain. Where a left leaning Jewish kid could take over large chunks of city bureaucracy, go mad with power, demolish entire neighborhoods to reshape the city's infrastructure and wield as much power as the president of the United States. It was really fucking tough.

The generation that's just about dying out has stories you wouldn't believe. I'm sure some of them were embellished when I heard them, but the few old enough to remember merchants with horse drawn carts came up when street fighting was still a thing. Guys for whom boxing or bodybuilding was the essential counterbalance to singing in a doo wop group or playing the clarinet. They socialized with each other by breaking balls - the only acceptable emotional display was a shared laugh cracking on each others' masculinity. Or a fight. Archie Bunker was not pulled from thin air. He was spoofing a very real stereotype of the time.

The ghosts of these guys still haunt parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Their kind was pretty much priced out of Manhattan by the turn of the century. Donald Trump is the modern embodiment of their hopes and dreams. The kind of New York cool that Lou Reed and the Ramones represented was very much shaped by living in a city populated with these kind of assholes. Tony Bourdain's attitude is that of a guy who built his career back when these guys still called some of the shots.

But they're anachronisms now, and have been since the 90's. The tough guy New York where you have to be an asshole or you'll get eaten alive is long gone. Boston and Philly went through similar shit. Immigrants arrived penniless, got treated roughly and fought back by taking over their own turf. That turf might have been the police department, the parks department, the fire department, sanitation or city hall.

That made NYC a really tough town for a while where being an asshole was the norm because you had to literally fight for what was yours.

The crab came pre-split lengthwise to make it easier but we had the normal tools for the tougher joints. The drawn butter dip was good as expected.

Sauteed spinach was a huge portion for a side a d came with roasted garlic chunks and onions and was buttery, delicious but a slight tad gritty unfortunately. Ate the lot anyway

King crab with clarified butter. I mean come on, it's gonna be awesome. And these guys know how it's done.

Other menu options include a raw bar with the usual oysters and clams, fried oyster roll, lobster roll and whole lobsters, surf and turf e.t.c.

Not super cheap, but super worth. This came to 60 bucks with 2 drinks, tax and tip. It was worth the trip and it's really high quality.

That's part of history, Britbro. There was a traditional gulf between slice joints and pie joints in NYC. Historically the mob put the squeeze on slice joints, telling them who they had to hire to pick up their garbage and who they had to use for their purveyors. That led to most slice joints being more or less the same here. The mob left the pie joints alone because those were the places they actually went for pizza. Because they weren't getting stepped on the pizza at pie joints stayed truer to the roots of NYC pizza as exemplified by Lombardi's (1905) - fresh mozzarella tops the pizza, which is cooked in a coal or wood oven at much higher temperatures than the ovens at slice joints.

And while most folks nowadays will say the mob doesn't have the control over restaurants that it used to many established pie joints still stick to a no slices policy.

Well this is our pie from John's.

Compared to pizza suprema the dough is noticeably darker, probably based on what anon said about cooking at higher temperatures.

The first thing I noticed was the fact that EVERY PIE WAS MADE TO ORDER. That make a huge difference. Lester the manager took our order and the kitchen got straight on it and you can see they're good at pizza tossing.

I couldn't see him put the pie together over the counter from our booth but it probably didn't take any longer than 40 seconds from a ball of dough to the oven.

Texture wise I preferred this to suprema as the whole thing was piping hot from the oven and probably traveled a grand total of 10 feet from the oven to table, so it retained a lot of crispiness on the base.

The crust was almost inedible on some parts as they were charcoal black, but the rest was alright, probably ate about 1/4 of the crust.

The tomato sauce was a lot tangier and less sweet than suprema which was more pleasant and enjoyable, in a strange way it made it easier to eat. Very rich in tomato flavour and didn't taste watered down or stretched out. Nice.
The ricotta was delicious and baked into the dough beautifully, I'm glad we added that on. In hindsight I probably should have added basil.

Staff are classic NY speed but friendly too.

John's overall felt more like a restaurant dining experience with some decent beers on offer, so I genuinely enjoyed it more. And the pizzas are fresher. Suprema was great too-but it was more of an express slicery to me. Which isn't a problem but it just depends how you wanna eat I guess.

If you find yourself on Bleecker street visit both John's and Fish restaurants desu, the crab legs were amazing and the pizza just as good. Thanks for the recommends anons!

Your approach to it changes. You do less in the way of bars and nightlife, more of museums, parks, concerts. If you're going to a popular restaurant you're more likely to do so at 6:30 on a weeknight than 8:30 on a weekend, because wait times an noisy crowds are less tolerable. But you're more likely to order a bottle of wine instead of a glass because you generally have more money to spend. And you know where the good places are because you've had the time to scope out a decent chunk of the city. You're rarely shooting in the dark anymore.

And you're less easily impressed. That Michelin starred joint may be beautiful, the service is great and the food is delicious. But you're very likely to know several places that are a little more humble but serve food that is on par to the Michelin joint in terms of taste for 1/3 to 1/5 the price.

Plus you'll have dinner parties with your other middle aged friends who stay in the city. Those are fun, too.

>>7632628
Good job explaining the difference between a slice joint and a pie joint. A good pie joint is an entirely different world. I'm to the point where I've eaten enough slice joint pizza for a lifetime, so I'm only hitting decent pie joints on the rare occasion I decide dinner will be pizza.

>>
great threads, OP. made me feel like trash for living in soho and still eating papaya dog and dollar pizza every day.
>>
I live in New York and I find pizza to be overrated, it's good every now and then but there's no way I could eat it every day. I guess because all pizza tastes the same more or less to me, as long as it's not fake shit like Domino's.
>>
>>7633643
Why would you eat pizza every day when there's so much food in NYC?

OP Here, finally back home in front of my PC, so hopefully I wont make too many spelling errors and my phone wont start autocorrecting words to "desu".

>>7632830
Sorry dude, I actually read this back in Heathrow airport, few hours too late pal! Maybe for next year for me :)

>>7632877
Yeah we were tempted with some of their desserts but like you said, we were stuffed, Would have been a nice contrast to all of that salt and vinegar too in hindsight.

>>7632924
Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything here. Michelin places will lose novelty on multiple visits, and for me they are a one-off visit kind of place.

I honestly preferred John's overall because we got an A1 fresh pie and it was a nice restaurant to sit and eat in, felt less like a diner.

>>7633582
Bro I went to Papaya dog on my 2nd day in NY, had a corn dog and a regular dog with onions and those green chopped pickle things, and a papaya juice, it was great

Welcome back to Blighty OP.

I never thought of i at the time but we should have egged you into knocking over the postcard stand . . .Oldfags will remember this!

Great updates and great threads . . .Thanks!

seems very similar to the totonnos restaurant in brooklyn i told you about op. Never considered the difference between a slice joint and a place they make you order a whole pie. I think thats a big difference. Totonnos pies are all made to order too

OP here, damn I miss it already and I would have loved more time there.

-The japanese food scene is expensive but worth it, we really enjoyed our sashimi and soba lunch at Restaurant Nippon, and the chef and staff were all very kind and accommodating, definetly worth a visit.

-Joe's Shanghai in chinatown was great for the dumplings alone as most people suggested, its quick service and a long-ass wait at peak times but I'd visit again for sure, or if anything try the Xiao Long Bao at an alternative. Order the crispy fish.

-Russ and Daughters is a great brunch spot, but like most good restaurants in NY there's gonna be a wait, I believe we got told a 40 min wait and got seated in 20. The quality of the lox and herring is top notch, would be a good idea to order something sweet either after or during the meal just to take the edge off the tanginess. Will definitely be coming back.

-I think we nailed it with the korean BBQ spot at Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong on East 32nd, never had beef of that grade and marbling before, and a platter for 2 costing just over 70 dorrah, tableside cooking and SEVEN complimentary sides? Would be silly not to try it. If you aren't a fan of spicy food however, might not want to bother as they Kimchi up everything there. Which reminds me, the Kimchi stew is out of this world. Add it to your platter for 6 bucks.

-Pizza Suprema and John's are two different worlds, in my humble opinion. I preferred John's of Bleecker's street because it tasted (and was) fresher, and the bases had a more pleasant crisp texture. Suprema was more "snacky" to me, but they had good slices regardless. And being located right outside madison square garden can lead to queues during show and event times, but they get you in and out fast.

-(seconds) before we went to John's we ate 1lb of king crab at The Fish restaurant next door, and it was awesome. Friendly service and sweet, tender crab meat for a fairly high price for what you get, but 100% worth it.

-Not even worth mentioning Katz deli, It was as good as expected and thousands of people who visit daily can't be wrong. And they aren't, in my opinion. Go hungry!
Final thanks to all the anon's who helped me out on my food adventure. Had some great suggestions and my trip wouldn't have been half as good if you guys didn't tell me about these places.

Hope these threads help other anons decide where to eat in NY too.

You guys have amazing food on your doorstep and I'm envious, I'll be back very soon!

I'll keep monitoring for a while if you wanna ask anything,

Thanks for the fun, everyone.

It's two different styles of pizza. A slice joint uses a gas oven that can hit 550F tops. If you make a pizza with fresh mozzarella at that temperature it's going to be a mushy mess. These places use shredded low moisture mozzarella, which is a totally different cheese. Pie joints have wood (or coal) fired ovens operating between 700-900 degrees. At that temperature fresh mozzarella gets creamy, and the pie has char on the edge of the crust in 90 seconds. These pizzas suffer for every second they're out of the oven, so boxing them up for delivery would be a crime. You serve them in the dining room, hopefully with a glass (or bottle) from your wine list.
>>7634347
Great threads, OP. You did good in my city. Sticking the landing with a proper pizza was a good move.

Been saving these threads. I only ever go into the city for work and have never been to most of these places, even though I have always lived close by. One of these days I have to make a point to do some looking around.

Anyway, have some meme donuts
>>
I haven't been in the City since before 9/11. Is it worth the train ride down from Albany? Meaning, can I have fun there for relatively cheap, or will I be stuck hanging out in sewage run off drains unless I bribe doormen with fifty thousand dollar bank notes?

I'm from NY but living in Bongistan, never actually explored the food scene over there. Going this summer and now I have a good list of places to go. Thanks for sharing!

I stayed at a sex motel in Brooklyn the other day for less than 100 dollars a night. It was a little out of the way, but there might be places like that closer to Manhattan. Either way, I think it's worth it. You can save a lot of money not doing expensive touristy shit and not going to expensive restaurants (not that there's anything wrong with either). I'm sure we could make a whole thread for poorfag friendly eats in NYC.
>>
>>7634849

soho is aite as long as you don't go too deep. live on prince and it's nice to be a little removed from the din of the east village.
>>
>>7635268
If you want to be near the East Village but away from the din, you're better off living in Alphabet City, you'd probably save a lot of money.

yeah, I looked at both for one-bedrooms or studios. most of the places I saw in alphabet city were $2000-$2500, depending on broker fees (found it difficult to find no fee places out there), and had only kitchenettes, which blow. plus would be a 25-minute walk to work.

my place in soho is around $2200 with a fully updated stainless steel kitchen and only a 5-minute walk to work. was kind of a no-brainer.

would probably live in alphabet city if I had a ton of roommates and wasn't living with just my significant other though, saw a ton of dope multi-bedroom places there on the cheap.
>>
>>7635247
I'm going to NYC this weekend and would appreciate some recs. Gonna be staying in Williamsburg. I'm up for some relatively affordable places since my friend is on a budget.
>>
>>7635573
Go to Fette Sau
>>
>>7635541
Have you looked into Avenue C and D though? Back in the day that area had a bad reputation but nowadays it's fine
>>
>>7635573
So you already have a place but your friend doesn't? What's the most you want to spend per night?
>>
>>7635573
Look up Robert Sietsema's reviews on Eater NY/ The guy has great taste, knows his shit and spends lots of time wandering around looking for really good, cheap, hole in the wall joints.
>>
>>7635573
Oops you're referring to food places

To start, the Mexican and Chinese places that cater to inmigrants tend be pretty good and inexpensive. Any place you see, you can look up the reviews on yelp or google to get a general idea of how good the place is.
>>
>>7635631
We're splitting an Airbnb. We're willing to pay around ~150 for dinner. We're also looking for affordable bars since my friend feels uncomfortable in more upscale places.
>>
>>7635675
Ahh, bars

Depending on where you're from, you might find the bars in NYC to be expensive no matter what, but a lot of places are relatively inexpensive and have a good atmosphere. I'm not too familiar with the bars in Williamsburg, but the East Village is a short commute (and the subways run 24/7) and has a lot of good dive bars, same thing with the Lower East Side which is right under it. Avenue A in the East Village is a good strip. And when you get the drunk munchies in any neighborhood with nightlife, there are usually plenty of late night food options.
>>
I miss the Lit Lounge in the East Village, that place was fun. Now it's a gay bar called "The Cock".
>>
>>7635692
We're from DC so prices are pretty much the same. Guess we'll just wander around till we see something.
>>
>>7635839
Either way I'd recommend the places I mentioned before, lots of bars within close proximity to each other
>>
What foods would you like to try on your next visit?
>>
Thanks so much Britfag for this thread! I'm visiting Manhattan in about a month and so excited to try what everyone's recommended. Enjoy the rest of your trip and have a safe flight back.
>>
>>7636873
Any questions?
>>
>>7635590

Yeah, looked all the way over and up into stuyvesant; compared to what I ended up with ($2200 post-fees w/ full updated kitchen), nothing seemed cheap/nice enough to justify turning a 5-minute walking commute into a 35-minute one. Will probably move out there once they hike my rent up next year though. Probably will be switching jobs to something closer to midtown so may just move up there too.
>>
>>7636981
For some reason I feel like you should still be able to find some affordable apartments by the Jacob Riis Houses.

But wouldn't Midtown be expensive as fuck to live in?

A lot more authentic mexican food. I'll probably spend a little more time in brooklyn or jackson heights in queens and the mexican food is supposed to be good there.

I'll probably save up and book a table at Yasuda's too.

>>7636873
No problem and thanks, it added some fun to my trip!

Anthony Bourdain's Layover in New York is also pretty informative on places to eat and places to stay, it's worth a watch on youtube if you havent seen it already.
>>
>>7632830

I'm not sure if this matters to you anymore, but I work in Midtown and I've frequently eaten at both. If you mean Serafina, I've never really liked that place. The food is like a bad diner and there's tons of better Italian places.

Umi is okay, but I end up ordering from there a lot as opposed to actually eating (work long hours).

>>7637060

Good thread OP, it's always nice to see the food you know through someone else's eyes.

Next time you go to Joe's Shanghai (hopefully soon), order the beef tendon noodles too.
>>
>>7637060
Have you had any Mexican food, or left Manhattan at all?
>>
I would recommend Udon West, I really liked it, but I'm not sure how well it compares to other Japanese food.
>>
>>7637066
We spent a little time in Brooklyn but the only Mexican we did was from a taco truck. It was good but I can imagine there's much better. Planning another trip for next year to get places I missed

Peter Luger's? That place is off the chain, but pricey as fuck because, well, it's a great steakhouse. Worth doing at least once in your life. Get the burger if you go for lunch or the rib eye if you go for dinner.

surprisingly a little cheaper, especially if you venture up into the upper east side.

That's why people buy places in unfashionable neighborhoods as soon as they can afford to. My mortgage plus maintenance (heat, electricity, water, building maintenance and taxes) is under $1k/month. But I bought my place four years ago, and where I live isn't even on that map. It is still possible to do this town on the cheap, but you will not be renting, nor living in a remotely fashionable neighborhood. But chances are it will start becoming fashionable a few years after you move there, and the value of your place will go up.

Or you get a job on Wall St and pay $3k+ a month for an unimpressive place with an impressive address.
>>
you're in nyc and you're eating at times square? how much of a clueless tourist idiot are you?
>>
>>7639250
NYC is a tourist idiot city. It's like going to London and never eating in a pub;

Can you do it? Sure.

Should you do it? Debatable.

Will you do it? Of course not, you fat fuck.
>>
>>7639165

It's not so bad if you work in one of the industries where being in the city seriously multiplies your income. I mean sure, I could cut my rent in half by moving to a secondary market like Atlanta, but I'd probably have to swallow an equal 50% drop every paycheck. Definitely does suck major ass for the hourly folk though.
>>
>>7639330
You could also just live in a non prime neighborhood
>>
>>7639425

This, but again, depending on your industry, time is money. If I wanted to save $200/month, I could turn my 5-minute walk into a 45-minute walk. If I wanted to save $400/month, I could turn my 5-minute walk into a 30-minute subway ride ($200 for unlimited rides for me and my SO, so would really still only save $200/month). For me, at least an extra hour every day not commuting is worth the money. Let's say my SO and I commute to a prime neighborhood 30 times/month each. That's at least 60 hours of wasted time each month to save $200. $200/60 hours comes out to about $3.33/hour. Our time is worth more than that.

Did consider Astoria when looking for places, but the $400/month we could have saved didn't seem worth having to rely on the subway to not be fuckish every day, especially considering we both work jobs with aggressive, high-variance, short-notice hours. Definitely a better choice for people working hourly though.

>More brooklyn places
If you come next time during summer a trip on the B train to Coney Island might be worth your while. The Freak Show may be gone, but you'll see plenty of freakish shit just walking along the boardwalk. If you want pizza from a 100 year old oven Totonno's is there, but if you've already hit Lombardi's in Manhattan it's not a must. Walk by Nathan's, but you don't need to eat there, either. Ride the fucking Cyclone, though (it has its own ticket booth). You're standing on one of the first places in the world to be lit with electric lights.

When you get hungry I'd strongly recommend Toné Café at 265 Neptune Ave. It's a Georgian restaurant with a huge oven in the center of the place. A bottle of dry Georgian wine, a kachipuri, and order of dumplings and a trio of appetizer salads plus a main ought to feed four easily, and will just break a c-note. Enjoy hanging with Georgians in deep Brooklyn, then hop the B back to Manhattan.

Another fun thing to do in summer is book an Air B&B in Rockaway Beach (Queens). I did that last year. Weird NYC surfer culture there, a cool beach, a few good bars and some decent restaurants. Definitely a way out of the way spot. A really interesting flavor of NYC few get to experience.
