Dried squid is my favorite road trip food, if only because it makes people roll down their windows and I can smoke.

Only ever tried Japanese/Asian brands. Got a bunch of Russian ones at a grocery store I go to but it all seems kind of sketchy.

I always decide to grill when I get drunk. Light up the charcoal, way too much kosher salt and pepper and garlic stuffed into little holes and a steak or pork loin or burgers that end up falling apart. Or I just pass out. One or the other.

Dried squid is such a good snack. The fishiness is pretty subtle, but it's very savory, and the chewiness is nice. Chewy, but not too tough. It's a great drinking snack. You can get it at a lot of Asian markets I think.

Also available from Amazon... but it's rather expensive. This brand is the one my local foreign grocer stocks though, and it's solid.

And that's the problem. Compound. Singular. Actual truffles contain hundreds of compounds which generate flavor and aroma. The synthetic oil only contains one. It's simply not as good.

And one can simply make truffle oil using a piece of a real truffle instead of the synthetic version thereby avoiding the problem. The juice from canned truffles is also far better than truffle oil, and not that much more expensive.
