Most people like bread, but they are disappointed when you bring it to a party. Even if it's from a very good bakery. Supermarket baguettes are also pretty terrible.

that's not really true. I've watched get-togethers and meals at restaurants where everyone is so eager to go for the bread while waiting for the food and then using it to eat the soup instead of a spoon that it runs out really quickly and they have to track down the caterer or waitress to bring out some more, often at extra expense.

Worst case, the host has a little left over to make breadcrumbs out of the next day, and you would certainly be remembered for that.

Unless you have a decent bakery that makes real French baguettes don't even bother. I'd say you'd have better luck baking a few on your own, but I'm guessing that's probably not true.

Its a dinner party, your host already has everything planned out. Unless they specifically ask you to bring something then call them and ask them what they would like to you bring. They may already have a wine or dessert or bread planned out for the meal. The best thing you can do it buy they a personal bottle of wine or something like that for them to enjoy on their own time. Its like you guys have never been to dinner parties before.

I said it was my first one. My mom said it was in bad form to show up empty handed and I agree. I also don't really want to bring a bottle of wine for the hosts to drink later. If I was going to do that I would just give them a 20-dollar bill.

A gift for the host is just that. It is to say thank you. Unless they specifically asked you to bring something it is bad form to bring something and expect it to be served during the meal.

just bring a bottle of wine. chances are it will get cracked open at the party. don't just bring bread, it's a burden on the hosts to have to serve it in addition to all the prep they already have to do.

Give them something personal. (I'm a Parisian on holiday and should have bought a handful of plastic eiffel towers. And hashish, it's crazy expensive here.)
Or, if you don't have an idea or time, get a bottle of wine. Or flowers, a beer assortment, a prepared gift like that, it can suck bad if you get the wrong thing.

No, no, no! Scratch the bread, scratch the wine, here's what you need to do:

Bring a joint of meat, the hosts will really appreciate it.

Bring a bottle of sriracha and pull it out once everybody sits down to eat. Ask each person individually if they would like a hit of it on their food, make sure you offer it to everyone before taking care of your own food or it is viewed as inconsiderate.
Also make sure that when you slather your own food in it you comment on how well their cooking goes with the wonderful taste of sriracha.
